Yes.....That is the question; do you think you lost face? I think not, you are not Thai and can never be. Seeing that you invited them to dinner, you should take care of the bill, but the young man felt strong enough about it, and wanted to pay, you questioned his decision but he insisted, you gave him some face, a good night was had by all....brownie points all round.

No problem at all. Some of my (younger) Thai friends are that quick with their credit cards that I have resorted to pretending to go to the bathroom and surreptitiously asking the waiter/ess for the bill!
