These stats seem a bit dubious to me, seeing as national HIV/AIDS prevalence is about 1% compared to almost 10% prevalence diabetes in adults.
Maybe AIDS kills more even so, but surely the list can't be referring to the "top killers" when non-fatal conditions like cataracts, arthritis and depression are on there ? |

Paul I think the liver cancer is probably related to the post over here on the parasites causing liver cancer. That post refers to 10% of Thailand being sick from it. Though I am totally shocked that liver failure due to alcohol is not on that list. In the nations that drink, it is certainly higher than the the things that Mike mentioned. Again proving that people can make statistics say anything they fit - not toward the OP, but toward the study itself, Philip James and even the Bangkok Post for publishing it.

These stats seem a bit dubious to me, ... It would make sense to separate fatal and non-fatal diseases. It would also make sense not to include diseases and risk factors in the same list. The high profile of AIDS, road trauma and suicide (presumably the main referent for depression) makes the male list look like mortality statistics for a younger age group, rather than the entire population. I presume a more carefully constructed list would yield the following main take home messages: 1. Use condoms (and follow other safe sex practices). 2. Quit smoking. 3. Use alcohol more moderately. 4. Drive/ ride more carefully (and demand the government do more about road safety) |

Think the stat's on killers of thai's is a coin flip. Take a diabetic, suffering from secondary disease of clogged heart arteries also drinks too much alcohol and is having kidney failure, (4.5 on efficiency) dies of a stroke. Autopsy reveals he is HIV positive and has arthritis and bronchitis. Now how would his death be classed.??
