Well they printed my letter, albiet slightly modified, in today's paper.
They said I was from Bangkok, alas, I am here in Japan. I would have loved to been able to buy a copy of today's paper to keep for myself...

If you are interested, here it is online

Letters to the editor

Yes, it seems like an April Fools joke. However, I wouldn't call the four paragraphs "offensive" as it is a subjective term. I think that "controversial" is a better way of describing those views.

For all we know, the writer could have very well just used the guise of an April's Fool joke to vent his opinions in his column without being challenged/getting fired for doing so.

That article to me seemed so over-the-top ridiculous, especially as it was in the motoring section and on April 1st, that I found it difficult to take seriously. It is bizarre the way it got through the editorial process though, and I can see why you find it offensive. It'll be interesting to see what the Nation's editorial response to your letter is, if any.

I'm disappointed that it's missing the "why some of my best friends are......but.. " attempt at disclaimer for posts of this nature from a few decades ago
Without that, I personally can't accept this article as a joke, only the author

Well I think that the guy should be fired, or at least strongly reprimanded. I can't believe the editors let it through.

There must be a number of members here who are married to a thai woman, are they not offended by this article? Or am I being over-sensitive?

Anyway, I sent a letter to the newspaper regarding the article.
If I get a reply-and I doubt that I will, I will post it here.

This is a fine example of shoddy journalism. The entire first section of the article has nothing to do with the rest, nor does it fit in the column.

I am not offended, because it is obvious that the author is biased, inexperienced, and sees the world through a very narrow lens.

I'm not sure if I tricked my wife into marrying me, of if she tricked me At any rate, I did not marry her as a way to stay in the kingdom, although we do plan to live there when I retire. We currently live in Miami. I also do not do business in Thailand, nor do I commit crimes while there. Does that make me a "good" farang? After all, I did marry a girl from the northeast. Maybe I'm really bad after all

Default Surely an april fools joke
Check out the first four offensive paragraphs of this article that appeared in the motoring section of The Nation newspaper this week.

I'd love to hear whet people here have to say about it.

I particulary like the way the subject changes seamlessly from the 4th to 5th paragraph, from talking about the Thai authorities trying to get evidence in order to catch the 'bad farangs', to discussing usage of indicator lights in Thailand!
