Residents of over 79 locations have objected to the construction of enclosures for grouping garbage bins in the city. Many of the objections are from residents in proximity to places of worship, educational institutions and hotels. The civic body has instructed its officials to identify alternative locations for the setting up of enclosures for grouping of the garbage bins.
18TH_TRASH_1146888f.jpg As many as 1,035 enclosures have been proposed to be constructed in the old city limits. The civic body has set up 795 enclosures so far where bins of a residential or commercial locality have been placed as a group. “The concept of grouping of bins is good. But they are misusing the facility at many locations. So residents oppose it,” said K. Venkatesh, a resident of Ashok Nagar. In order to ensure that the streets are free of overflowing bins and unbearable stench, the Chennai Corporation started installing blue corrugated iron sheets to cover groups of garbage bins. However, many of the residents have started to dump garbage recklessly around the bins instead of putting the waste inside the bins. The project, a brain child of Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy, is being implemented at locations across seven zones in the old corporation limits. Work is under way at 80 locations. The project aims at grouping of bins that are scattered everywhere. The enclosures were proposed to be locked as well, with only the tricycle workers and compactor helpers having access to the facility. But the corporation workers are yet to take control of the dumping of waste in the enclosures. The number of bins in an enclosure ranges from five to ten. Over 6,000 bins are being used for garbage collection in the old corporation limits. Source: The Hindu |
