Default Koodankulam protesters call off fast
The 11-day-old fast by locals against the Koodankulam nuclear power project was called off on Wednesday following chief minister J.Jayalalithaa’s assurance to convene the state Cabinet and pass a resolution urging the Centre to halt further work at the plant site.

She assured that the Cabinet would meet here Thursday and adopt the resolution and depute a delegation under state finance minister O.Panneerselvam to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on his return from the US on September 27, and present a memorandum.

Ms Jayalalithaa gave this assurance to a delegation of social activists, anti nuclear activists and priests, which called on her at the Secretariat on Wednesday.

Earlier, Mr Manmohan Singh’s emissary and minister of state V.Narayanasamy met Ms Jayalalithaa and updated her about the government’s efforts to ensure safety at the nuclear plant. He told mediapersons he was carrying a message from her.
