Default 5,000 cr to interlink TN rivers
The state government on Thursday proposed a comprehensive flood control programme at a cost of Ts. 5,166 crore under which it would take up work to link the Gundar River with Kattalai Barrage in two stages using Central funding.

Presenting the financial report 2011-12 in the Legislative Assembly, state finance minister O. Paneerselvam announced that Kattalai barrage would be linked to Agniyar, South Vellar and to Manimuthar at a cost of Rs.3,787 crore in the first stage. In the final stage, Manimuthar will be liked to Vaigai and Gundar at a cost of Rs.1,379 crore The said work is a part of the first phase of linking of Cauvery with the Vaigai and Gundar Rivers.

Kattalai barrage work across Cauvery is already in progress at an estimated cost of Rs.189 crore.

The state government also set apart ` 90 crore for 201112 for `369 crore TamarabaraniNambiar River linking work under progress.

On the controversial Cauvery water dispute issue, TN government maintained that it would insist the Centre to notify the final award in Central gazette and constitute Cauvery Management Board for the implementation of the final award.

It also assured to urge the Centre to ensure that Kerala does not take any action to disturb the status quo in Mullaperiyar issue as the matter is pending in Supreme Court.

TN government has also announced categorically that the Palar dispute would be settled early through the Supreme court as the talks with Andhra did not yield results.
