By far the BEST kendo/samurai game to date. I have not played kengo 2 but the original was one of my favorites. I’ve played both “way of the samurai” series and they are good in a different way. For pure authenticity, kengo 3 is the bomb!
Almost 260 techniques to master. You can even choose your iaido style. Quick draw techniques are sick! I think like 60 counter attacks. Wazas include nuki, kaeshi, harai, uchiotoshi, and the list goes on. I believe all the basic elements in kendo are within the 260 techniques, just gotta find them. I have just learned 60 of the 260 techniques and it's mine boggling to decide what techniques to use. You earn money by taking jobs. Assassination, bodyguard, protect buildings. One assassination job took me into a large house where over 50 samurai were waiting to ambush me. I got killed just before I made it to the final room. This morning in fact. Heal by resting, either sleeping at an inn (cost $) or sleeping outside. You can be attacked when sleeping outside by thieves who will try and steel your money. How cool is that!!!! You can buy and upgrade a bunch of different swords. The character selection is huge. Maybe 40 male characters and about 20 female and several unlockables. U can wear masks or straw hats, choose from several outfits. You travel all over Japan training, taking jobs and fighting famous samurai to ultimately find and fight musashi. You’ll encounter swords, spears, hammers, and I think at one point I’ll have to fight the famous sickle and chain master. (Can’t remember his name. The duel with musashi) I’ll encounter several famous samurai including kojiro sasaki, musashi's arch enemy. Game play is as good as it gets. Button mashing will only get you killed sooner then later. Everything must be timed right or it’s you who’s going to be cut. Choosing the right kamae is very important as it allows you to counter properly. Patience is required and without it you’ll die real soon. One must position himself in the proper manner to be able to defend against multiple enemies that will try and surround you. Ok....I think you get the hint. Although it’s completely in Japanese, after a while you can figure it out by association. I used a walkthrough hint from one of the game sites. Very helpful and easy to find online. I bought my kengo 3 on ebay for $40 and the Magic Slide Card 3.6 system for $35 (which doesn't require modchip installation). With shipping, cost me about $90. DAMN was it worth every penny. |

The only REAL ENJOYABLE "Kendo Game" I know is Simple 1500 Series
![]() - THE 剣道 SIMPLE 1500 シリーズ Vol.99 Simple 1500 Series Vol. 99: The Kendo Released at August 29, 2002 for PSX (*note though that this game is in Japanese Language only, never seen it in english) Other Samurai/japanese sword fighting Games, well except for Tenchu series which is primarily focused on ninjas. Kendo Rage (if you like to dig up an SNES somewhere for some Legacy gaming) for SNES *there was also an old kendo game in nintendo family com before, I doubt though it will be enjoyable in this age of 3d game play, as the shinais look like toothpicks in poor bitmap images of some sort. Bushido Blade, parts 1 and 2 for PSX Tenchu, parts 1 and 2 for PSX, part 3 for Playstation 2 for PS2 -Kengo 1 & 2 -Sword of the Samurai -Way of the Samurai 1 & 2 -Onimusha 1 & 2 -Kessen 1 & 2 And last but not least... -幕末恋華・新選組 Bakumatsu Koihana: Shinsengumi Released at December 22, 2004 for PS2 for PC - Shogun Total War, *really nice game! ![]() * There was also some 2D samurai sword fighting game I played in Dreamcast also before but I forgot the name, 2 of the characters in this game resembled Kenshi and Saito in his shinsengumi outfit from the Samurai X Animation series. |
