I don't think you'd like it" this will spark a "I'll show you!!" response and she will come and try Kendo!
*sees D'artagnan in a close futur getting tsukied and sent flying far far away while hearing the longest kiai ever "take this you manipulating bastaaaaard!"*
Confirms rule number 100a-7 which is: don't brag about somehow making a girl do something, she'll make you regret it dearly.

Well...my better half has already answered the question, but that won't stop me from doing the same thing. We do both kendo and iaido together, although I prioritize iaido more and he probably prioritizes kendo more.

There is one other couple at the dojo, who started training together (we did not: he started kendo, I started iaido). We don't have any parent-child training partners, but I have inspired my father to take up his aikido training again after many, many years.

My husband is yondan and I recently got my nidan. Although we belong to different dojos, we try to visit each other's dojo as much as we can. We met at a dojo, got married and continued kendo except for short breaks here and there...it is definitely a "lifestyle"...like I don't mind my husband coming home at 11pm three times a week and he doesn't mind me not coming home till midnight every Friday because of kendo practices. I do believe that having such a strong common interest makes our relationship healthier.

My husband's new set of bogu - $1500
My new Nakajima jin - $300
Having a spouse who understands the need to spend so much money on Kendo equipment - priceless

Just manage to view the website. In the pictures for the 2nd Annual San Jose Kihon Taikai, is the lady shinpan Eunice Chan (sensei?).
i dunno her first name, but chan sensei goes to alameda dojo, which is one of miyata sensei's east bay kenyukai dojo. she might go to another dojo, i dunno, but ive never seen her at oakland or berkeley dojo.

For me and my sweetie kendo is a solution to all arguments. He just says "shut up and put on your bogu". Whoever wins the match wins the argument. Works everytime. Ofcourse we have rematches for the more serious issues.

Hey, you have a dream girlfriend and we all envy you.. I saw her photo and she is also hot kendokas.. Stop complaining about Tsuki, I would probably ask for more Tsuki.. I have been bad, spank me ~~

My other half does Kendo as well. It's great, though frustrating when she hits me with morote tsuki!

anyways to the guy who asked how you get your wife/girlfriend/partner etc. into kendo do what I did - tell her "nah, I don't think you'd like it" this will spark a "I'll show you!!" response and she will come and try Kendo!

Hi,

I'm sorry if there is already a thread out there on this topic....but I was curious as to how many couples there are practicing Kendo?

My husband and I started in January of this year (2005) at SF Dojo, Ca. I could not imagine doing this without him. It is so consuming. We talk about it non-stop. Since this is a lifestyle change, I'm glad that we are doing it together.
Please feel free to stop by my humble website

Megan
There is one couple in my dojo. More common is the parent and children doing Kendo together. I know of a lot more couples doing iai together.

Awww... that is nice. To be able to have same interest with your husband and talk about it all the time. We used to have a couple in our dojo. Both husband and wife have baby faces and are very cute together. However they have been MIA for some time now.

I can't get through your website, maybe some temporary technical problem. Will view it again later.

So...maybe someone can offer some tips as to how to get their spouse interested in kendo? My wife supports my participation, but I can't seem to get her to give it a shot!
Yeah, any good subversive strategies that won't get me in trouble? We have 1 new couple that started in the spring just before I did; they've been out for the summer. We have 3 father/son groups (I've got both of my sons with me now).

I was thinking if I convinced our daughter to join, then she'd probably get guilted into joining, but I still don't think I could convince the wife to try it though.

First, there's the rotator cuff injuries threaten to end her volleyball days completely or any use of her shoulder that involves lifting her hand above her head.

Then there's that really bad kendo experience... One of the women was warming up for the AUSKF finals in the hallway while we walked through. She launched into a suburi doing fumikomi. I'd swear she covered 10-12 feet (around 3m) with the fumikomi and just passed my wife by about 2 feet (.75m), just as she landed, with strong kiai of course. My wife probably would have jumped through e-bogu's vendor table to get further out of the way if she hadn't pushed into me. We were both left breathless--she was in shock, and I was wishing I could strike like that.

My wife and I both study (play? ) Kendo. She has all the talent, I have more experience. We have a lot of fun in keiko, she's always trying to win by out-performing me, and I'm always trying to win by out-thinking her. It leads to interesting matches, time after time.

My wife had practiced Kendo for a few years but stopped when we moved to a different state. I really wanted her to start again with me, but knew better than to pressure her. She made her own decision to come back to Kendo after meeting Koike Sensei and some of the fun people from Seattle he brought with him when he taught a seminar here in 2000.

I met Chan sensei only once, two years back. Didn't get a chance to know her more or even keiko with her. I'm not good with memories (people's names and faces), but some how I can remember her pretty well. Hope to be able to meet her again someday.

''honey, you don't hit me like that anymore, like when we were just dating'
My wife doesn't do kendo, and probably a good thing, if she felt I had outdone her in jikeiko I would be sleeping on the couch for a few days.

I get a total rush when my husband and I are in jikeiko together! I could be dead tired after many rounds, but when he's the next one, I am renewed and ready to score on him!

We have a couple in our dojo who practice together. The wife used to wear a white keikogi sometimes. I swear she looked like a panda bear - so cute.

Yes, yes it is. She is one of our head Sensei's at SF. I am one of her students

Also, thank you to everyone who has responded so far. I find it very interesting as to how many couple there are out there (not just married). And wow, whole families, that must be an interesting home life
