Default Shoulder inury
Hi all,

June 2004 I've fallen onto my right shoulder during an Aikodo class with my full weight, about 230lbs. I only took some rest and februari 2005 I've started kendo practise without pain.
The only thing I couldn't do anymore was sleep on my right side anymore something I took for granted. Now about 4 weeks ago I fell on my shoulder again during a seizure which caused me to loose strength and controll in my right arm. It's slowly comming back but everything is still painfull.

I'm seeing a physio therapist but I'm affraid he doesn't know enough about kendo specificly.
I do know he's good as he managed to find all sore spots without hurting me too bad like some butcher therapists would.

He thinks that the tendons which hold the arm in place are too long which is causing me pain, like if there is a whining lil kid in my arm.

Now to complicate things, I'm allergic to most painkillers like asperine and ibuprofin which means I can only take paracethamol or paracethamol with codeine if the pain gets really bad.

Has any of you had an injury like this?

If so how long could something like this take?

What kinda exersizes are there to keep my kendo up so I don't drop back too far? (I haven't been to the dojo yet because I've been too busy with my new job but notified them thru email)

Thanks in advance

Lars

I dont quite understand the relation between too long tendons and pain resulting directly from having too long tendons. I myself have too long tendons holding any joint in my body and never had pain directly caused by that. Unless I made some weird movement that caused the pain.
Maybe I just miss something in your explanation; could you please elaborate on that?

Shoulder is a very complex joint; take care of it well. What helped me alot is strengthening the area for extra control of it. Not bodybuilding live in the gym type, but just some extra training.

I hope you already went to a doctor - although in my case it didnt help much. Maybe get some picture taken. My fysio is also a "manuele therapeut" (sorry didnt know the word in English) and a good one I might add. Go see one of those.

Anyway I wish you very good luck and a speedy recovery.

Cheers

Sometimes the best thing to do with a nasty injury is to just rest to let it heal as quickly as possible. Better to take a little bit of time off than screw up the injury worse and miss even more time from training while that new problem heals.

The best training I would suggest to you is mitorigeiko.

If the tendons in one place are getting too long, other muscles have to work overtime to make the shoulder work. It can also lead to inpingement pain.
Find a sport physio and the bucther like ones are usually the best. (Pain non-withstanding). The shoulder is very complex and a myriad of different things can be wrong and can have many solutions.
For pains, icepacks can actually work wonder and for more long term pain control, accupuncture can also work very well.

I'm currently going to through retraining the mechanics of my shoulder from a problem I was too lazy to solve properly some 10 years ago. It's causing havoc with my men-cut and kamae and I'm probably look at some 6 months before I'll have it sorted out, so please follow the instructions of the physio and don't rely on the internet.

I'm already doing my exersizes daily which my physio gave me and I hope to start cardio fitness soon once the pain gets less so I can keep and regain some of my stamina, maybe loose some more centimeter on the waiste so I don't have to get that expensive do. Need to work off 14 centimeter then it's at 100 but that's another issue.

Before starting kendo I had alot of back pains and sore shoulders but I was thought to relax my muscles and doing my taiso exersizes the backpains went and the sore shoulders mostly.

My right shoulder always have been a problem since the fall on it in 2004 during that aikido class, it went less and I was able to do kendo and while doing the exersizes listening to what my sensei told me in relaxing more the pain went away mostly till I had this last fall at home

Today I'm going to my physio again, I'm positive as this morning was the first without waking up with pain in my shoulder. It must have helped going to watch my dojo buddies which really lifted up my spirit also seeing the beginners of the September course getting their first parts of bogu and hearing them complain about their lack of movement. (this was golden )

I'll have to wait and see what the physio today will be saying but I'll keep you all posted.

Thanks for your advise sofar.

I've done my first suburi this morning really carefully.

I was a lil nervous I would over do it so I quit after 20.

I've done 10 straight and 10 like you do in kiri-kaeshi.

I've used a regular shinai which has a really light feel, a sempai warned me not to us my koto shinai because it would put more tension at the end of each strike.

It felt good to do some suburi again even thou the shoulder and arm were sensative they didn't hurt so I think I'm going the right way.

I got green light to try starting keiko.

Ofcourse my boss had to scedule me for late shift this tuesday so I won't be able to go to the dojo and have to wait another week.

The practises on thursdays are usually heavier so I wonder if it would be wise to try that knowing how I pull myself thru keiko.
