I think the official term is "extendable baton." Made me think about the guy who was trying to make his bokken in parts so he would be able to take it with him on his bicycle. We couldn't get it in his mind that in the time he would have his bokken together the attacker would be long gone. Was a funny thread |

Indeed a scary couple of videos. The only guy that walks away is the chap who decks the guy as the blade is being drawn. Because he would have had opportunity to stamp on the other guys head. Without that our man with the knife would have gotten up angry and killed him.
There is an old saying "Give a wound, to save a kill" which refers to being willing to take a minor injury to save a major injury, which if you watch the videos virtually no-one leaves without a trip to hospital for some serious putting back together. It looks like those courses are for doormen and the like, whom are often accused of heavy-handedness which if you understand that this sort of situation can happen in a split second are perhaps only acting in a way which we all would given that it is a job of work and not so well paid, and you want to be able to go back to work tomorrow, cos hospital time ain't paid! Love your local bouncers, but don't hug them! I have seen knife drill against guards with guns and the guys with guns do not have time to draw them let alone cock, aim and fire them. That said if someone draws a knife and waves it at you, it is a defence tool so you have the upperhand if you can blood and balls it out. I have witnessed this with both knives and firearms although i would say that there is no wallet in the world worth being injured for (And i mean hospital, bits off, dead or worse) Take care in the world, if the man with the weapon wants your wallet hand it over and go home. See well, don't have nightmares and keep yourselves safe. |

Yeah those thingies. Hmm, I wonder if you could put together some sort of hinge and latch system so you could flick it into action. It would probably be awkward, but if you're really lucky it might form into one piece and lock into place just above the attacker's head. Almost like a bokken-whip. |

To be honest I heartily reccomend some steel toe capped boots. They are essential in any street fight. Tough, gives you an extra something, not to mention it saves breaking your toes when 'putting the boot in'... ![]() Running is probably first what comes in my mind if someone threats me with knife. Even I live in a very small and peaceful town something bad happens sometimes. In front of a one bar not far from my home, one guy got shot with a shotgun several times and is in hospital now (bad aiming?) There were drugs involved and that kind of stuff. And the shooter is somehow relative with my neighbours. |

But those of you who live in places which you may have to worry about something like that...how do you go about preparing yourself when you walk out the door? Do you carry mace or some sort of collapsable club or just good running shoes? 2) Have some self-defense training 3) Be prepared to run 4) Carry an extendable steel baton at all times 5) Be prepared to run ![]() |

But those of you who live in places which you may have to worry about something like that...how do you go about preparing yourself when you walk out the door? Do you carry mace or some sort of collapsable club or just good running shoes? The very best thing to do is to NOT move around like a victim. The best self-defense technique that any martial arts school teaches is actually awareness. If you are constantly aware of everything going on around you, you won't find yourself in a position to be victimized. Attacks generally happen where others cannot see so, being aware of that, you avoid possible places of attack. Attacks generally happen when they can be launched unexpectedly. If no one can approach you unexpectedly, you have drastically cut down your chances of being attacked. The majority of the U.S. population walks around engrossed in their own world, and completely unaware of what's going on around them. These people are victims, just waiting to stumble into the proper time and place to be victimized. If you conciously work to avoid that proper time and place, your chances of being a victim drop to practically nothing. Just my observations and opinions based upon my early life. I'm sure other's will vary. |

Knife fighting? I remember sitting in a lesson given by an unarmed combat instructor for the Australian Armed Forces. |

Paul mentions awareness which I believe is a big thing. Which makes me wonder if--with the recent boom in iPods and handless phones--if attackers specifically target those preoccupied with something else.
Pete, I'm curious to figure out how you got into your encounters with knife fights...not as in techniques to disarm or anything...but just wondering what happened. |

The problem I see with knife defense. Given that for some reason I can't run or appease the attacker, is that realistically I could see myself having a semi decent chance to stop their knife, grab the wrist, etc (all of which are unlikely, I'd stand a much better chance of getting stabbed, not knowing what I'm doing). But then imagining it was some big nasty guy fighting me, the problem would be that once I have his knife hand, then what? I could try to grapple him, and would probably fail, but if I did succeed, I probably couldn't hold him down, especially if he had buddies. I would of course attack him in an attempt to get him to release the knife, but that probably wouldn't work. Could go for a groin shot, but those are over rated in effectiveness, and good luck getting one in on someone who has any sort of natural fighting ability. Seems like a guarenteed loss.

But I want to hear the story. must have been about.. about 15 or 20 yrs ago. i went up to nyc to visit my friends. we decided to go to village and get drunk, and we got drunk pretty bad. we started driving around manhattan, and stop to take a leak on the empire state building. got ticket for pissing in the public.. we tore that ticket in front of the cop and said thank you very much. went back to village and got some more to drink.. on the way out of the village, there were bunch of people blocking a street. usually we would have found different street to drive by, but we were drunk and stupid. we decided to use that street. sure enough one of the guy on the street came over and start banging on the hood of my friends car. my friend decided it would be a good time to get out of the car and kick that guy's ass. he went out of the car and kicked that guy's ass. i went out of the car to help kicking the guy's ass. when we were done, my friend turned around and start walking to his driver side door. the guy on the ground pulled the gun. i kicked the gun away from him. my friend saw that and get little pissed and pulled the ice pick out of the car to go plug the guy few times. the guy pulled switch blade. i grab the blade and took that way from the guy. my friend saw that and opened his trunk and brought out his car jack to smash the guy's head in (didn't get the chance to do that).. that's when this bunch of middle aged koreans pulled up in a mini ban. they all got out and told us, me and my friend, to go home. we were drunk, but knew better than to argue with bunch of drunk middle aged koreans, we said 'yes sir!', in korean, and drove back home. it was a fun night. if i remember we had punctured tire on the way back to his house and spend good hour changing the tire on l i express. i'm not good at fighting, actually i'm really bad at fighting. i was just very lucky kid. i'm surprised that i haven't get stabbed or shot while i was growing up. had ton of stupid fun, and don't want to repeat them again.. but while it lasted, it was fun as hell. pete |

That reminds me of the time when I was working at a Thailand ice /drug smuggling factory. Several of my workmates started to "disappear" and I ended up discovering the whole operation. I ended up surrounded by 20 guys, all with knifes and machetes. They stole my girlfriend, and I ended up facing the boss 1 on 1. Man, was he a tough guy!
..I jumped up in the air and landed on his chest though... ..In slow motion.. ..I didn't want to fight..I promised! LOL |

You're fighting it out with knives and icepicks in the street, but know better than to argue with a "bunch of drunk middle aged koreans". Was there something special about this group, or are drunk middle aged Koreans a group that you want to avoid pissing off as a matter of policy? - I have heard that South Korea has the highest per-capita number of black belt level martial artists anywhere in the world. pete |

Man, was he a tough guy! back in early 80's in nyc was rather crazy for korean and chinese teens. maybe some of the older folks here might remember things about flying dragons and white tigers.. or korean power and others.. the shooting at the funeral.. pizza palor where one of the gang was hosed down.. people in west cost might still remember kk and other youth gangs.. yeah.. it was like movie, only difference is people actually got shot, stabbed, and died. and some were actually my friends. pete |
