Default Excuses, excuses!
Have any of you guys ever recieved (or heard) a ridiculous excuse from someone as to why they had trouble with you, or why they hit you? A while ago (about 2 months) I heard:

"Against other people I'm fine, but you two fight too close for me" from a guy that I've known for a while

and

"You hit me because your timing is wrong" froma 6th dan talking to one of my mates, before either of us were ikkyu. This is one of my favourites!

Some of us here must have heard plenty. So c'mon, dish 'em out!

once i received a very nice, clean and powerful men.... on the back of the head! i was completely, i mean completely 180 degrees turned around. his excuse was:
"oh, i thought you were just about to turn around" lol. yeah sure.

some months later i received a dou in the back from the same guy.

---------------------------------------------

some ppl bend their head/neck in such weird ways. i just go for straight men but if they try to move the head out of the way i might end up hitting an ear or a neck instead.

so i get this every now and then: "you evil bastard, stop hitting me on the ear/neck! that hurts like a bitch!".

say what?? what a lame excuse. if i hit you there, it's because you do bendy kendo! don't try to blame it on me or my 'evil' ways!

------------------------------------------------

got this from some ppl as well... "you hit me just because your kendo is weird." ooooh well, pardon me for not doing perfect hachidan kendo but still kicking your arse

.

Hmm??..I said something similar to you, but also quantified the comment with saying that it was my job to try to keep you at distance....

Here are two recent ones that I've heard....

"You're cheating!!" - when one of our members got his shinai stuck under the arm of another member during ji-geiko.

"You only got me because you're faster" - said by the same club member when I scored men on him.

You can go under the shinai, you can go over or under. I do like doing the under the shinai thing.

It wasn't you. This guy was using it purely as an excuse for getting a battering by two different people in quick sucsession!

I know that and considering his level he must have known that. Which is what makes it a crappy excuse.

Kinda like:

"Try to hit kote" *POP* "No fair, you did it a way I didn't expect-waaaa"

I like doing it under as well. It's sneakier.

As a slight defence - some people's kendo is just a good or a bad fit for you. There's certain people who don't give me trouble but give others lots, and vice versa. It's my job to work it out, no excuses, but it is what it is. Also, beginner's timing is really funky and they don't respond to the normal cues that seniors do, sometimes leading to unexpected results, so perhaps that's what your 6 dan dude was trying to say.

During a seminar a while back, I regularly scored kote on a godan, senior member of a national team. I admit I was puzzled, and during 2nd practice asked him what was happening. I wanted to figure out if he was just letting me practice kote or if he was trying to teach me something else.

He explained that he was having a lot of trouble with my kote and that I was actually scoring. He continued to explain that he saw the begining of my attack, countered and moved in to score. My kote was so slow he was countering air with my kote landing as he was launching for his attack . He described it as a "dead leaf falling from a tree" technique.

Needless to say, once he figured it out (2nd keiko) the universe returned to normal.

I have been trying to correct that left hand ever since Once I figure it out, I will learn how to do the "dead leaf" technique on purpose
Sometimes scoring or giving a more advanced players a challenge underlines our weakness.

Ahhhh, the "dead leaf falling from a tree" I would have never put it that way myself(what a great name), but I know what you are talking about, one of the beginners in my dojang does the exact same thing, I could see it coming from a mile away, but its so slow and cumbersome, he somehow got me, but like you said, the universe usually goes back into equalibrium.

I do agree with the guy who says, "I am fine with other people, but your distance is too close", because there are a few people who I play with whos distancing just baffles me and I end up backing up and up and up become they seems just so close, and I make sure to practice with them as much as I can to learn to get a good distance with them. I dont think this is an excuse, unless the person uses it as one, it just seems like an admission that you are better at getting the distance then they are.

I have experieced the "wrong timing" thing also, when a beginner just attacks at the stupidest time, that they might actually hit you. Or, my new favorite technique, the "Dead leaf falling from the tree" waza. Why dont we name all of our Waza like this!!! Lol.

I am going to name my new Men strike, "Lighting falling from the blue sky" waza. Awesome.

but if someone is giving you trouble with their maai, that's your OWN fault still.

you should think to yourself "my bad, i'm not used to this distance and i should learn how to deal with it" instead of saying out loud "you just got me cause you fight from too close/too far". that's kinda lame really.

I agree with you. But I have had peopel come up to me and say, "you distance was so close I couldnt do anything", and I didnt feel as if they were making a lame excuse, more of just saying, hey, your maai realy worked agaisnt me. But also, my senseis say that if your ma ai is too close that is a bad thing, so it can be a lame excuse. But it can also be telling you something about your own kendo.
