I'm surprised she doesn't include Yukio Mishima's four novels from The Sea of Fertility. Of the four, Runaway Horses, the second in the series, is my favorite. There is a samurai tale interwoven with the novel's main story that has intriguing parallels linking the two. Great hot-headed, young samurai stuff there.

You beat me to it! Yes, it's an excellent web site. (I was going to post a link, but don't need to now.)
But I do want to ask about people's favourite smaurai fiction. I DON'T mean manga, I mean novels. I want to read a lot more such books and would be glad of any recommendations. This web site is great, but I want to hear from Budo people too, including beginners. What do you look for in a samurai/Japan history novel? What works? What sucks, and why? |
