Kendo does not stress blocking. If your friend is really worried about getting caught off guard and cut in half, he should just hit the other guy before he comes out of sonkyo.

Oh my god it's started already! Looks like it's going to be another interesting summer with the kiddies out trolling. I presume that we can ignore Neal's objections about piling on the newbies if they're obvious goobers, or do we have to try and be nice until they prove that they're goobers?

Gotta be the latter, I'm afraid. Give them warmth, support and information sufficient to enable their personal empowerment first - then get the torches and the stake.

I see you study Meng Waza...

"See my kote! See my kote! (kicks opponent in the crotch) Well ya should have been watching my foot!"

Who blocks nowadays? Get cut. You opponent will be totally suprised, giving you a window for your own attack

neither of which are used in Kendo also you are unlikely to find references pertaining to their use in EI sorry iaido

shinken or iaito are used,in iai

Here's the deal:
1. If you're not currently practicing at a dojo, we'd be glad to help you find one.

2. If you are practicing at a dojo, let us know what it is so we have a little context to answer questions in. As far as I know Kage-ryu is not being practiced in NC.

3. If you've just read a lot of manga or watched a lot of anime and are basing your questions on that, see #1. These forums are about reality, not fantasy.

"Zatoichi" is a chambara movie. There is no such style of swordsmanship. If you'd like to learn something real, there's the AUSKF dojo list from NC.

Kageryu, you're in Durham, NC? That's my neck of the woods. If you want an Iaido or Kendo dojo I'd be more than willing to rustle up the info.

I'm almost 100% sure that there are no legit kenjutsu dojos in the area. The only koryu that I am aware of is Muso Shinden Ryu (one at TKI and a study group at an Aikido dojo on the outskirts of Durham).

There is also Kyudo if you're interested.

Just drop me a pm and I can send you the info. Or if you'd rather I can just plop the contact info here.

Musashi was a historical figure. There is a school associated with him, and it's not taught where you are.

Zatoichi is entirely made up. It's a series of movies made for entertainment.

Guys, I'm done here. Consider due diligence to have been observed.
