Hello everyone,
As a sort of spin off on the voices of the sword site, my wife created a Kendo accessory (non commercial) example /Japanese Culture site.

Please enjoy!

http://www.twilightchaya.com/

I recommend highly the Wallpapers section!

Thank you.
I will let her know.
She was sort of shy to put it up at all, and the more feedback and encouragement I can get for her the better.

Let me guess:

This one?

That's my personal fav so far.

We've just released a "Hometown" link.
Interesting Japanese culture and histories!

Truly lovely.

your wife's site, not you

I would like to try my hand at making the karaage, could you ask your wife (unless you already know the answers) some questions for me please.

What kind of oil should be used for the frying? I tend to use Vegetable oil for most frying with occasional forages into Olive oil and peanut oil.

In the part where she says to deep fry each side for 5 minutes I got a bit confused. The phrase "each side" suggests shallow fry where the pieces cook a side at a time (those bits that are actually in the heated oil) whereas deep fry tends to cook the pieces all over.

Really sorry to sound like a pedant, and this is absolutely not my intention; just would like to do it right.

cheers

Very good, nice site design!

So, he asked for me to make a
large sized Tenugui.I bought 1.5yard
of fabric with green, which is very
similar to a Japanese traditional green.
Then, I cut it out 6 inches longer... Dude, it might have been easier to ask for a used circus tent instead haha

Good looking site Benkei, the story about the tenugi made me laugh.
The memories of home section has some interesting stories.
I'll have to try the karaage recipe, will be waiting for your answer to Sats'question.
Kudos to your wife.

On a side note, am i the only who gets the "not found" message in some parts of the site? to be precise here is where i got the message:
On The Handmade Kendo Accessories page under the "other items" section when clicking on the items links.
The memories of home, i can't get to the third page.

No, I found that as well, I just took it to be work in progress stuff.

Kenzan,

Wow, what a great site! Congrats to your wife on such a great website. It brought up a lot of memories of growing up in Japan. All the pictures and iconography gave me that feelilng of warm familiarity.

Not only that, my Mom is also from Fukuoka! We still have lots of family there.

I know you're going to get a lot of this but let me be the first (?)....has your wife thought about making and selling her sewing goods? I for one, would buy a custom tenegui and bukuro.

Well, sounds like you have a lovely family. Congrats again.

Olive oil, Veggie oil, whichever you have have is ok, however I like Rice Bran oil myself.
On the turning over issue. That is correct. You'll want to flip 'em over after a few minutes of frying.
You were also correct on the 404 errors. These are pages not yet complete so you'll have to keep checking!

Thanks for the Kudos!

So even if they're deep fried, we have to flip em over. I still don't understand why but the chef says so.

I haven't tried to cook karaage, but when deep frying sometimes you need to turn things over once or twice, specially if they float, as the underside tends to cook quicker than the top side, I always do I when I make empanadillas and stuff like that.

This is making me hungry again....

As my wife has answered that question to me as well in the past, her answer was:

"Because cooking Nakatsu no Karaage isn't like cooking French Fries."

Then she hit me with the frying pan to drive home the point.

LOL
