Its common for schools to pay a small fee to a club instructor if they take someone in from outside the school itself, they are called a 外部 (gaibu) teachers. This is usually to pay for transport and what not, and isnt much. Ive never known one that wasnt at least 4dan... that being the minimum level you usually have to be to teach at public school here in Japan.

If you are at the school anyway (I assume you are a contract teacher) then you might be able to get that money but - if I were you - I wouldnt take it. For me, bukatsu is a natural part of the work you are employed to do (be that written in a contract or otherwise) and part of your responsibility to the kids.

If they want to pay your travelling expenses to shiai and what not (free bento when you referee/attend a gasshuku, the occassional tenugui, etc etc) then I think that this is fair game however.

If you decide to take it and are contracted it may cause problems with your company, so dont mention it to them unless they know already.

edit: ps, good luck whatever you choose!

Kenshi thanks for the advice, It sounds like it will probably be only for 1 or 2 months. Also my teacher is informing my company about it. So just kinda see what happens.

Thats the best way. Some companies go a bit crazy about stuff like this.

If you have a big enough bu with enough experience behind it then it should run itself... they probably just need an adult there to make sure things dont get out of hand!!!!

If you're not sure about what your duties will entail, I believe there's a really good documentary series called Bamboo Blade that follows a typical high school kendo bu as they train for a big taikai. Chiba sensei even makes an appearance. Should spell out many of the issues you'll have to face.

Pretty much I already know. Mostly its just running class and bringing the 1st yr studnets up to speed. More or less the same that I have been doing last yr. Possibly more time on weekends ie trying to make tournaments etc if/ when I hear about them lol. Alot of time due to work etc the 3rd yr Sensei isn`t able to make it to the club practices. Ours is a small dojo that just got up to speed this yr w/ about 25-28 Kendoka. The senpai is pretty good about running class smothly. Its out in country side, so the head sensei is ni dan, then me and another lady or shodan and help teach.

The real question is: Whose getting the better end of the deal, you for getting paid or the sensei for not having to teach the kids anymore?

Good luck and watch out for a shinai kancho

Make sure to take LOTS of photos (or, I should say, have lots of photos taken - as it's not the easiest to do when you are training/teaching) - those students will make memories you will cherish the rest of your life.

Make sure to take LOTS of photos.
If you do, be aware that sharing those photos publicly could you in big trouble your school.

Actually, there's a lot of regulations and rules in place that restrict just what photos can be taken in schools and at times who can take them and for what purpose.

Best to check with those in the know as these can vary from place to place.
