Default Other sword arts
I have been thinking about having a go at fencing. The sabre interests me, and I have this idea that I would like to be familiar with a legitimate Western sword art, though I am committed to Kendo. The university that I am wanting to go to this Fall has a fencing club that welcomes beginners and supplies equipment, so it would be easy to try.

Does anybody here practice fencing as well as Kendo? Does anybody here think casually fencing would harm my practice of Kendo?

A member of my dojo is actually a fencing coach. He has been to olympics, international sporting competions, but because he is a coach, he can only sometimes make it to training.

Obviously, this is not your situation. Fencing does not seem to affect his kendo, just the time issues that is all

Even in the university that I went to (small), club fencing was a serious sport involving daily practices with lots of cardio and strength training. So, unless I'm wrong, "casually" is not a real option. That said, I'd go for it. You're only in college for 4 years - even if you had to stop kendo, it would still be there for you when you got out.

I honestly had not even considered that. I've been in contact recently with the club of the university that I'm transfering to, and they've said they practice three or four times a week, and are looking to host their own tournament soon. Maybe I should see if that uni has it as an athletics elective (my current community college does, I think), and learn about it that way so I wouldn't be getting in the way of their serious practice?

Thank you for that suggestion, he sounds like an interesting guy.

I could be wrong, then. But I've usually seen it as a serious sport along the lines of crew. If you're interested in it, then go for it in any case. College club sports are a blast.
