I have yet to find anyone who practices "real combat oriented kendo" who is any good at kendo. Maybe in Japan there are guys hidden away but not here.
The idea of practicing 15 or more years and only being nidan or sandan doesn't sit well with members of the "instant gratification" school of training. In some of these schools you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a soke, grand master or shihan. Jeez. |

Yea, I was just trying to be polite. I didnt want to step on any peoples toes. I have visited the Thunder Eagle academy. I have done "keiko" with them. They don't do kendo, not like we do. But they call it kendo. |

I went to their school to just see what was going on: I saw an ad at my college for "real samurai swordfighting". They advertised (I kid you not) that if you wanted to be like your favorite anime swordsman, you could learn it there: Kenjutsu, kendo, iaijutsu, battoujutsu, jujutsu, taijutsu, etc. just to name a few on the flyer. I swear I am not making this up.
I went, I made the mistake of putting on my bogu to practice with them, and we fought. I mean that. Fought. No semblance of keiko was ever enacted. Thats how they role. They bring out shinai, shinai that have been shortened to "koadach" (no spelling errors), a "nag"(actionflex baby), and a yari. The last was my favorite, because it was a rattan bo with a length of foam TAPED on to the top. I'll be going for my ikkyu again in Febuary. I'm an intermediate at best. I managed to beat their "renshi" at least twice by their count, and more by good ole sport kendo standards. I am not bragging. I'm giving you an illustration. If I can find their ad I'll scan it in and let you see it. |

On a serious note I once met a japanese guy who could literally throw people with a shinai, and showed some of the 'banned' kendo stuff we don't see anymore. Garrotting with the do, ripping off men, leg trips etc were all there and were previously acceptable, so he and his friends just kept it going 'for a bit of fun' when they got a bit bored in the dojo. The tsuka strike under the men I found, errrmmm, interesting....
