Default Something about Kendo Makes me Like Beer
So, I've said before that I've noticed a lot of people in the Kendo community seem to like alchole or beer. I never did like it. But I've been with folks in post-keiko practice enough to try (sip) many different kinds of drinks. (I'm not supposed to drink for medical reasons, eh) but, I am actually starting to LIKE beer. Weird.

So, I've discovered non-alcholic beer. It's good enough I suppose (and certainly less calories?) Something like O'duels. (Has anyone tried the Amber O'Duels? Does it taste anything like dark ale? hmmm. Or is there a non-alcholic stella beer equvilant?)

Anyway, so, I wonder, what is it that makes beer, especially post-keiko beer, so good? lol

I have written elsewhere about the importance of beer after practice. In Japan there is a social significance to drinking after practice. Specifically as you drink you can no longer be held responsible for what you say and this allows you to speak frankly with each other regardless of the difference in your social levels. In kendo this allows you to ask questions that may not be appropriate within the dojo where the social stratification is more rigidly observed.

Ewww, non-alcoholic beer! That was the worst six-pack of my life and really regret letting my mom insist on buying it for me years ago.

There are 2 reasons why beer tends to taste good after practice:
1. When you're tired, hungry and thirsty, anything that you put down your throat might taste better.
2. The social setting can make things taste a little different due to peer influence.

But then, there is always the fact that you might have found a beer that you like. There are hundreds of varieties of beer with various tastes so it's likely you just haven't found the one you like until now. Before I was legal to buy beer, I tried a sip of it from my dad and Keystone light and also thought that I wouldn't like the taste of beer. But after trying out a few varieties, I began to find the ones I like (the darker the better for me)

Does that mean that darker beers tend to taste similar? I havent tried the Oduels Amber beer yet... but I wasnt too keen on the regular. still it is exciting to be able to drink something.

hmm and yes, about the loosening up thing...yeah. I wish there was some way to uhhh, make it look like I was more drunk so that I could loosen up some, and have everyone think that its the beer.

Its super easy for me to loosen up, I dont need beer to do it. For many people I guess its hard, but for me its much harder for me to be the opposite in how beer makes you feel. heh if that makes any sense.

You just wait until everyone else is drunk, then they won't care. Also, cute spelling on O'duels...

A thread about non-alcoholic beer....

I've seen the forum content slowly go down the tube over the years but this is just too much. How does one go about terminating their own account?

ohhh peoples. lol

Apparantly it IS the alchole and not the taste. lol

All seriousness aside, you could probably ask Neil to do it for you. (Or another Mod.)

I dunno, would that be enthusia? (As in, I'm enthuistic about it cause I cannot spell?)

Stella Artois.. beer...?? well I dont know. Taste absolutely nothing. The alcohol is the only think that might justify it's existence..

Any beer slightly lighter than coal is not worth drinking, in my opinion. But we're stuck with Staropramen here..(but there is a slightly darker version of that too. Still far from being dark though.)

I used to have access to a very nice store (Huckleberry's), which had what I refer to as a "wall of beer". Basically half of the back of the store was a big...cooler wall of beer! and you could go through and make your own six packs. it was great!
I found my favorites to be, in no particular order:
Hoegaarden (pronounced WHO-garden), Francizskaner??(something like that, green bottle with a fat little friar on the front), ANYTHING by Spaten (especially Optimator!), Laughing Dog Huckleberry cream ale, Blue Moon, Sapporo, and pretty much anything by Henry Weinhardts. There are a few others I can't remember.

Personally I haven't ever gone out for beers with my dojo-mates...maybe there's something wrong with me?! I do like a good beer, especially after a hard practice (nothing beats a beer straight from the draft at that point)
