We use emotions to be an object of observing our mind. Wholesome or Unwholesome are the same in term of insight development.
Loving or Metta without Equanimity (upekkha) may transform to Lust. Compassion (karuna) without Equanimity may transform to Sadness. Joy (mudita) without Equanimity may transform to Envy. To be found that the emotions just something that is not mind. Arising because something and disappear because something are a good practice. ![]() |

from post #1 Again, in my tradition we understand this through the 10 Bulls doctrine that is a very Zen way of understanding this. ![]() |

Do we eradicate emotions or develop love and compassion?
Developing love and compassion by themselves doesn't necessarily help us to deal with troublesome emotions if they arise unexpectedly. Extreme emotions can still overcome people who haven't developed other practices and investigations . So we practice loving kindness and compassion and develop awareness, equanimity and wisdom. There is no need to consciously try to eradicate or suppress emotions, with correct practice they lessen gradually. There's no 'either, or'. ![]() |

Emotions are valuable tools if they are neutrally observed without getting hypnotized by them. We don't have to believe every emo energy that rises up, and we benefit if we view these movements of energy as indicators of the quality of our relationship with the appearances, circumstances, and patterns of existence.
Compassion arises naturally in direct proportion to the degree of clarity we've cultivated re: the nature of existence - and when we begin to see how trapped living beings are in non-beneficial patterns of unaware agitated reactivity to the appearances, circumstances, and patterns of existence. Contentment and joy (bliss) arise naturally in direct proportion to the degree of clarity and compassion we've cultivated. |
