Ottappa is a reflection on Karma; that willingness and preparedness to stand back and think it through. We consider the whole process from the initial action ( with the ramifications both for ourselves and others) to the final results. The clearer our understanding, the stronger our reasoned faith in Kamma. There develops a wise fear, an intelligent fear based upon the painful consequences of our unskillful activities.
This is a very wise view about what is Karma in a buddhist context... this understanding gives you real freedom about yourself and your own acctions.

the things which uphold and protect human beings and society from disintergration, chaos or anarchy.
Interesting ...

Great article, thanks very very much for posting Daz!

I had a chat with my Thai friend about this (hiri & ottappa), she identified/recognized them off the bat & said she was taught these virtues(& their importance) in elementary school ...

It is time I stopped thinking about it and made the effort to visit.
Hi Gerry,

I too am interested in the Thai Forest Tradition. I visited Amaravati Monastery for a day last year and I intend going back again this year.

There are details about staying there on the website and there's also Chithurst. I don't know of anywhere else - but I live in the south of England and haven't checked other areas.

Kind wishes,

Aloka

Ajahn Jayasaro was a famous monk in Thailand. He was English.

He wrote many books. I found one in English version (A Buddhist Reflection) in this ]Chayasaro Books[/url]

Wonderfull sukitlek dear,

I realy like this kind of aporach: direct, clean, austere and grounded in daily life...

Also I am looking for a Theravadin tradition Sangha here in my country... just to visit them. This aproach has caught my hart very hard.

The knowledge of the elders... sounds beautifull...

As I was rised in my first years basicaly by my grandmother and then in my adolecence I know about the wisenesses of a wise elder...

I have been interested in the Thai Forest tradition for some time.
I started my practice with Soto Zen tradition and I am ok with it, but here I have shared with other forum members some insght of the Theravadin tradition and I can tell it is getting into my heart...

In the UK we have a few monasterys of this tradition and I want to go for a longish visit, maybe become ordained, if I could at my age.
If you can... go ahead Gerry dear, I feel you have the skills for it!

Who in the world
is a man constrained by conscience,
who awakens to censure
like a fine stallion to the whip?
Those restrained by conscience
are rare —
those who go through life
always mindful.
Having reached the end
of suffering & stress,
they go through what is uneven
evenly;
go through what is out-of-tune
in tune.
