This was made easier when 1 person companies were allowed to set up. With some of the forms it asks for person as CEO.
I find most people know that you arent really a CEO if your not, as soon as they talk to you. If they are talking to a CEO as part of a sales call or admin request it becomes clear that you have no other management team anyway. A point of interest, in my study of human behaviour, I found that the title a person chooses to identify themselves with reflects so much of their personality. Selecting CEO when your not managing a team of executives usually relates to feelings of insecurity and the need to be seen as bigger [better?] than they are. If this wasnt the case, why not use Manager as title instead, or just their name? |

Is it just me, or is calling yourself 'CEO' of your small company a little bit wanky? When I think of the term CEO, I think of big listed corporations with multi-billion dollar market caps and thousands of staff.
These days, it seems anyone who starts up a business with one or more staff is calling themselves a CEO. I think it was the dot com boom that really spurred this trend on. What do the rest of you think? I've seen a few people on here refer to themselves as CEO, so I'd be interested to hear your thoughts too. In my opinion, to call yourself a CEO I think you have to be managing a team of managers at the least. If you're just managing your workers, then I think calling yourself CEO is a bit rich. For the record, I don't even have managing director on my business card, I simply use the title 'Financial Planner' because it best describes what I do. |

Technically you are correct, a CEO is the overseer of various executives, or the very least, managers.
But I'm in printing, so I see business cards all the time (and thus plenty of titles) and you'd be surprised how commonplace it is (especially for 1 man operations). Doesn't really bother me all, titles don't mean anything to me. I printed a funny one out a few days ago actually "top guy". - Jake |

I agree with you, I run a few businesses and on most of them I don't state a title.. as I am sure with many entrepreneurs we wear a few hats.. !
On a few of the business cards I have Director.. but only use that card for the high profile meetings. In other meetings I have cards with no title and this tends to work well. I also don't put a title in my signature on my emails, as again I can be wearing a few hats, from accounting, to web design, to sales.. so if they were to see the Director chasing up invoices then it can look like a shabby operation! CEO and MD should be reserved for people who are actually doing what the title says ![]() |
