R1 is in my head a cheap entry to the sport. And pricewise the alternative is an old car in a National class or a VOC, where you spend more time in the garage than driving it.
R1 is a new modern reliable car that is a L car, and I am sure R1 drivers have fun fighting it out with other R1s, and I am sure for many a R1 is more than enough to handle. If you know and can handle the R1 100%, that is a good basis to jump to R2. But you need the fighting btw the other R1s to have fun, otherwise you are only last.... |

There is of course a money question here as well, and an well used 2005 C2R2 will cost from 25 000 euro, and I have seen a little used R1 from 13 000 as far as I remember, but there are few of them yet. But in 2011 France and also Poland will run R1 Trophys, so in 2012 they will come out in the 2nd hand market.
R class prices stolen from the R-class news thread; R1: The Renault Twingo R1 kit costs 9.500 €. R2: Renault Twingo R2 kit: 27990 € http://www.renault-sport.com/en/rall...ws=124296.html Ford Fiesta R2 ready to run: 40.655 € (The price is from the Finnish magazine VM) Citroen C2 R2: Tarmac kit: 18.400 € Gravel kit: 19.300 € http://www.piecescitroensport.citroe...R2complet1.pdf Citroen C2 R2MAX: Tarmac & gravel kit: 34.000 € http://www.piecescitroensport.citroe...AXcomplet1.pdf R3: Renault Clio R3 Maxi kit: 52.000 € “Standard part” kit: 7.800 € “Off-road” kit: 8.200 € http://www.renault-sport.com/en/rall...io_r3_maxi.php Honda Civic Type R: The kit installed into the donor car, which is not included in the price, 95.000 €. http://www.jasmotorsport.com/Pdf/188.pdf R3T: Citroen DS3 R3T kit: 62.000 € http://www.piecescitroensport.citroe...alisation1.pdf Note that a “kit” doesn’t include the donor car or assembly of the kit. As you can see it’s little bit difficult to compare the prices because they include different things. Usually there are also some kinds of options and add-ons which increase the basic price. |

I don't think there will be Twingo R1 cup in Poland in 2011, it seems to be too expensive. With Twingo R1 you have almost standard car, standard engine, standard synchro gearbox without LSD (just different final drive), no rear dampers in kit. So it's completely not competitive with almost any other cars. It makes sense just when you have cup with many cars running. Also no kit for gravel available. Kit price is 9500euro without tax plus donor car, plus building a car... 25k euro at least to have it properly done... Generally the idea is good but only when you have cup with many cars (and on good roads as rallying with standard rear suspension on fast and bumpy tarmac could be really dangerous).

The Twingo R1 is getting a bit more all-round when the UK cup tuners Monster Sport Europe are 'making' a gravel version of it:
29/22/2011 Monster Sport Europe Ltd appointed UK Renault Sport dealers - Twingo Renaultsport Trophies UK Will be interesting to see how that one matches the Fiesta R1 ! |

Is there tech info and other info in the Citroen DS3 R1 ?
Norways first R1, a Fiesta owned by Martin Schanche Jr will debut on gravel in Rally Sørland 5 may, driven by Anders Kjær. Will be interesting to compare the times to the rest of the field, and to get info on cost on a R1 build by the owners team. |
