Default The Diver's Wife (new song)
So Joanna performed a new song called (apparently, I'm not 100% sure on this) "The Diver's Wife" last night at her concert with Philip Glass. Hopefully a recording of it will surface!

I wish I could understand all the words.

Tell me why is the pain of birth
Lighter born (?) than the pain of death
I ain't saying that I loved you first
But I loved you best

Ann from the Milky Moon forum has worked out some lyrics, and I've included a few changes.

A diver is my love
(and I am his if I am to be deceived),
who takes one breath above for every hour below the sea,
who gave to me a jewel,
worth twice this woman's life
though it cost her less
than laying at low tide to see her true love phosphoresce.

And in an infinite regress,
tell me why is the pain of birth
lighter borne than the pain of death?
I ain't saying that I loved you first,
but I loved you best.

I know we must abide
each by the rules that bind us here.
The divers and the sailors and the women on the pier.
How do you choose your thought?
How do you choose your name?
How do you choose your life?
How do you choose the time you must exhale and kick and rise?

And in an infinite capsize,
like a boat tearing down the coast,
double hulls, bearing double masts.
I don't know if you loved me most,
but you loved me last.

Recall the word you gave
to count your way across the depths of the severing (?) world.
Well, you will look (?) the waves that lay a bed of shining pearls.
I dream it every night,
the ringing of the pale. (?)
The motes of sand dislodge the shocking, cooking (?) bright,
That 'tween the cast-off shells reveal a single heart of white.

And in an infinite backslide,
ancient boulders sink past the west,
like a sword at the bearer's fall.
I can't claim that I knew you best,
but did you know me at all?

A woman is a lie, a woman is a lie.
You do not take her for a sign in anchor on the stone (?)
I know not, faceted and fine.
And never will I weep.
I'll hunt the pearl of death
to the bottom of my life,
and ever hold my breath 'til I may be the diver's wife.

See how the infinite divides,
and the divers are not to blame
for the rift spanning distant shores.
You don't know my name,
but I know yours.

How does she keep coming up with such incredible lyrics? She's one of the finest lyricists around, no doubt.

I love that it's more boat and ocean imagery, which makes me think of Sawdust & Diamonds and Colleen.

Put "Swansea" into the mix, and those are my thoughts exactly.

Well, my guess was phosphoresce, but I can't be sure. It seems likely considering she's talking about jewels in the previous line.

This is unsurprisingly beautiful. As Owen said, how does she keep coming up with these lyrics, especially considering how long the Ys and HOoM songs are? I'm so glad her brain works the way it does.

This is so perfect. I'm in love with the rhyme scheme, especially the phosphoresce/infinite regress / rise/infinite capsize parts. The harp is some of her most beautiful, her imagery is spot-on as ever, the vocal melody has me stunned, this is just everything I could want from a Newsom song.
