It's not an action series. Tony's uneventful, family life contrasted and intertwined with his 'job' as a mafia capo is the entire premise.

Are you not familiar with the gangster genre? They're all about family. Never go against the family, Maniac.

The first episode seemed more focused on his wife and daughter rather than the wider family. So I'd say the comparison with the Godfather isn't that strong based on the first episode. But anyway yeah, I didn't really like the Godfather all that much either, and don't feel all that much affinity with a strong family morality. I think a morality based on genetic rather than memetic/ideological similarity is primitive and animal-like. I can't identify with such wider-family-valueing characters.
