Okay - replace the word "during" with "after" then.
Even given that this change took place after the civil rights movement, you cannot tell me that the aftermath of civil rights movement had nothing to do with the demographic-political change among white Southerners. It was a racist counterreaction movement, which is why Richard Nixon sought to appeal to white Southerners during his campaign with promise to reverse or delay effect of civil rights legislation. Which is also why such a significantly greater number of minority group members now follow the Democratic party rather than the Republican party; it's one of the legacies of the civil rights movement. During or after - does not chnage the validity of my argument. If you only want to focus on Democrats who were racist during this time period, how do you explain the fact that black voters in Nortern cities began to shift to Democratic party during Great Depression? The effforts of Martin Luther King Jr. to work with Lyndon B. Johnson on civil rights issues during 1960s? |
