The application is called "Apple Software Update".
The description is "Select the items you want to update, then click Install."

This is a NEW SOFTWARE PROGRAM that is randomly popping up on users machines, positioned explicitly as an update. Period.

OH YES 17%. I have a feeling that 17% of computer users are nerds who scour the web for the best software, but most aren't. That is why IE still commands almost 80% of the ****ing marketshare, check your facts at the door please. IE is closer to 75% now. Not too long ago it was 95%.

Clearly, there is choice and clearly, users are making it.

You lose, Wiggy, just like Al Gore. You are Al to Agathon's Tipper.

YOU ARE PROOF THE DEVIL USES WINDOWS AND THAT IS THERE FACT. I am knee deep in my own **** now trying to argue with you and frankly you like John Mackin Roe have me going in circles, chasing the tennis ball but never scoring a point in the process. When will you learn? It is useless unless you answer logically, rather than for the sake of hitting the ball around, eventually you will tire out and collapse. You can take your anti-Bush rhetoric elsewhere, Mr. Gore.

Well, you, again, make an ass of yourself by assuming. Excuse me? You're the one who just assumed anyone who bought iTunes has purchased an Apple product. You're the one who just tried to play the "BUYER beware" card in a thread where purchasing has nothing to do with it.

Whats the bigger hassle? Reading what you are installing, or removing what you installed?

ACK! That's an invalid question, for reasons the CEO of Mozilla have outlined. Users should not expect brand new, uninstalled software to be installed as part of an UPDATE service, it's part of a trust the users develop with the software makers.

You remind me of the tools who criticize people for not reading the 60 page EULA of software before they install it. And if anyone here is making an ass out of themselves, it's the guy who is saying "buyer beware" to the case of people not buying a damn thing. It's the guy saying it's people's own damn faults for not interrupting everything they're doing and reading the details of something that is interrupting their work (and in the vast majority of cases, the text in that field is worthless things like "Fixes bugs" -- users are more or less trained to ignore it).

Simple fact is, this is sleazy and ethically questionable. There's no way you can bullshit your way out of this, Tubs.

Asher's world: Most computer users are not very smart and download anything that pops up and claims to be an update. They should be protected from this at all times. Nevertheless, they are savy enough to be expected to find, download, install, and use Firefox all on their own. That the browser has a 17% marketshare somehow proves this. OH THATS NOT A CONTRADICTION YOU'RE JUST A REPUBLICAN IF YOU CAN'T SEE IT

Got the "update" today. Didn't download. I never liked Safari.

I certainly don't think this is a huge deal, but Apple shouldn't call it an update, that's blatantly misleading.

I was actually planning to download Safari for Windows on my own, and I think this is kinda slimy.

No... I don't see how IE being bundled LIMITS choice. It might INFLUENCE choice, but it actually makes it easier to get FF or Safari or whatnot (as you otherwise would need to get a disk or something), so it certainly does not limit (ie, decrease) choice.

That does not limit your ability to choose another browser. You can simply ignore either one...

It limits the choice to not install the program, I suppose, but that's a pretty silly line to argue giving how harmless installing either of these programs is.

That said, it does suggest that objecting to safari's installation is silly also...

I'm amazed that this thread has gone on this far. So a big corporation has indulged in a marginally misleading practice to artificially inflate its market share. Big surprise!

It's like being shocked to learn that a politician lied.
