I have been using cell phones as a manager for some 21 years now, of course when i started they were this humongus car phone, not a hand held like nowadays.
I have been carrying a cell phone on my hip for maybe 12 years, and it is something I experience a lot, with or without phone attached to my hip, vibrating sensation. I often wonder is it is causing a problem medically or not, but not so much I obsess about it. I have to carry 2 cell phones, one is my "hotline" to shops since I have charge over 6 plants worth of equipment, approx 70 pieces of equipment, so I can set a response up should one be needed. the other is for all else. It wouldnt bother me if we were not allowed them, seriously, but in todays culture, it has become one of those necessary evil's. I spend a lot of time on road, covering parts of 6 counties, so yes, it certainly is a valuable tool. I have resisted upgrading to a Blackberry, I am fortunatly one of the last holdouts, however, when this phone dies, that will be next ![]() |

In my humble opinion, you're all crazy for having a cell phone to begin with. ![]() 1) Some people leave the house from time to time 2) Some people have friends 3) Some people enjoy being able to coordinate with friends without being stuck at home all the time |

Nice. Very few things are important enough to justify calling someone while away from a phone at home or work. The cell phone craze reflects an artificially created need, but since it caters to the deeply narcissistic trends of our time, it will surely continue to grow. Just kindly count me out. ![]() I'm at the mall and I see a game my brother had been looking for but no one has it in stock. I call him to see if he wants me to pick it up for him. I'm out shopping, and so is the SO, but at different places. He's to meet me at the mall at some point, but I don't know when due to traffic, lines, etc. He calls me when he's there and we arrange to meet. It's January and it's -20 out side with heavy winds, and my car won't start due to a dead battery at 2am. I call for a jump since no one else is around. I don't have a landline at all. It's kind of pointless and I get local calling anywhere in Canada on my plan. I'm stuck at a play and I'm desperate to know if my hockey team is winning. I check scores. I have my door buzzer go to my cell phone, so I can answer the door and let people in the building even if I'm not there. I can also tell the delivery people to just let me pick it up at the depot rather than having them try the next day and day after to deliver as well. I'm out on the town and get a call telling me my dad's been hospitalized. I can rush over to the hospital to see him. On the weekends where I'm "on duty" and need to be available to be contacted, I can still go out and do everything since I've got my cellphone to be contacted by. If, for whatever reason, I do not wish to be disturbed I turn off the ringer and vibrate and I'll check my missed calls later. I can also screen my calls readily with caller ID to not answer people I don't wish to talk to. My SO moves every 4 months due to school, so switching landlines is expensive and impractical. He's got a cell phone that works no matter where he is. To say all the needs are artificial is asinine. If you don't see the purpose of cell phones, then you're simply dense. |
