Where the hell is the Cephalopod option? Octopi and Cuttlefish are incredibly intelligent, and are likely contenders for full blown consciousness after mammal contenders such as dolphins.

Whimpy male Cuttlefish will mimic females to get close to the real females, and while the big brute dominants are chasing away other males, will mate with females on the sly, passing on their devious and cunning DNA. This kind of behaviour just has to lead to consciousness.

Oh, and their tentacles are highly adaptable and perhaps equal to our opposable thumbs.
