A question about the wooden divider beads- are we supposed to do anything differently when we get to them? Say a different prayer? Cross ourselves?

Well, if your spiritual father prescribes something, that's what you're supposed to do :-)

Otherwise, Herman is right - there is no universally "correct" or "proper" practice. The two practices I've most commonly heard of are to either ignore the divider beads/knots, or to pray "O Most Holy Theotokos, save us" on each one.
