The interview here took place on the CBC radio program Q last summer two days before he played in Vancouver. The audio was available before but they film select interviews and this was just put up this week: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYG_BJNhT6U
A friend told me that my description of Sonny at the concert got picked up and put on Sonny's website: http://www.sonnyrollins.com/itinerary.php Quote: |

A short time before Christmas, a bluesman going by the name 'Sherman' on the BlindmansBlues forum, was badly injured when the taxi he was riding in NY was struck by another vehicle. The cab driver was seriously injured, and Sherman got out to help, and in the process of trying to get the cab driver out, was struck by a third vehicle. Sherman ended up in hospital with some broken bones and head injury, involving some brain damage. After he had been in a few days, and still not able to communicate, one afternoon Sonny Rollins walked in with his sax and started playing to Sherman. The nurses were horrified and tried to stop Sonny from playing, and you can just image what Sonny told them. A few days later, Sherman was able to crack, "well, I guess this puts an end to my career as a ballet dancer!".
Way to go Sonny! |
