I'm a mutt. My father's father was born in the hills of Rome on an apple orchard - a genuine Latin redneck. His wife, my grandmother was from Siena. My mother's father was Neopolitan and her mother was Genoese. Italians are notoriously tribal and competitive. Italy would break up into twenty small countries given the opportunity. I consider myself an American, like my father before me. My paternal grandfather came over in the 1880s as a small boy. Legend has it he with two brothers and an uncle were chased out of Italy for the latter killing a man who stole apples. In the old country, such things (absolute property rights) were commonplace until the laws changed in the late 19th century.

One one side of my family (Dad) has been in this country since the 1700's from England, have a land grant from King George for our plantation in SC. My moms dad was born in England and came to the US as a boy, and her mother was born just after her family came from Ireland, her Dad's family also has Irish in it. So I have never done the exact math but as near as makes no difference I am 50/50 English/Irish.
I respect order and civility like a proper Brit, and like to raise hell at times which I chalk up to the Irish half. |

15/16 Norwegian and 1/16 Swedish. I'm 15/16 Celtic Spud Boy; great-great-Grandma was a German immigrant, accounting for the 1/16. Northern Midwest roots (Chicago & WI) since 1800s when all originally arrived on US shores- I guess the Irish Catholics more/less tended to intermarry during those generations. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2TVn-zl9w4 |

You all are mixing terms... The poll said "Race" Poll... not Nationality Poll?
There is a difference... and shouldn't be used interchangeably. Race is something you are born with - it's what you are genetically. Nationality is determined by WHERE you were born - so you could be genetically Chinese, but if you were born in America, your nationality is American. Ethnicity is somewhere between the two. It is used these days by politically correct people to mean "race", because they want to avoid using the word. But actually it doesn't mean the same as race. Ethnicity relates to the traditional culture of a particular community or population. It's likely that the people who follow that traditional culture will be of the same race, but it is possible that some of them will be of mixed race, or of another race altogether. Just Sayin 8-) |
