Default Laserdiscs soon to be obsolete?
A buddy was asking me if I thought optical media was obsolete (which I do) and I happened across this archived post from alt.video.laserdisc thought some of the responses were kind of funny (ikn hind sight of course)

[thumbup][rofl] Yeah, man they had Internet in 1995? [thumbup][rofl]

As for Laserdisc, I've got a Pioneer one, and believe it or not, it was only last year 2010 that Pioneer actually stopped making Laser disc players... that shocked me...

I've got the original Star Wars on Laser Disc and quite a few others PLUS... wait for it... Raise The Titanic

Look at that pre-9/11 world, it's so innocent and no one is complaining about the economy.

Those early Internet days were glorious times and will not be forgotten!

As for the LaserDisc, I never owned one--but was VERY tempted to get Star Wars Trilogy THX on laserdisc back in the day.

I wanted a Laser Disc player in the '90s because it was THE thing to have for Home Cinema at the time.....at least until DVD came out.

And? I can download one in 4 hours. What's your point? Your e-peen is bigger?

Doesn't change my statement one bit, it's fact.
What are you 12 !?

I just mean't that if we can already download a whole bluray in so little time already then imagine what we'll be able to do in a year or two ?

LD has some crazy good 5.1 tracks.

BD Lossless tracks bring back that smooth audio experience. I'm obsessed with HD audio tracks and how they sound on BD.[yes]
mmm I love lossless audio soundtracks and FLAC files... people who listen to mp3 out of logitech speakers and think "mmm this sounds great" suck.

My middle school and high school had/has a TON of laserdisk players. They sunk tens of thousands of dollars (my guess) into buying all of those players and discs, and then DVDs came out several years later. [rofl] The great thing was that even before DVD was out, only a handful of teachers ever even used them. Great teaching tool, and a great investment. ...[thumbdown]

I remember sitting in awe when we saw our first laserdisc in elementary school.

I was dumbfounded that you could SKIP ahead, rather than simply fast forwarding.

I had a laserdisc player. Several years ago it stopped showing any signs of power. I suspect the power transformer board is bad. However, its not worth repairing. Yet for some ODD reason, I STILL have it sitting on a shelf.

Bought it open box, they were using it for Demo's. When I took it home it STILL had a copy of Aladdin in it.

Compared to VHS of the time the quality was incredible. And even compared to DVD the quality is slightly better on average, but very hard to tell. Mostly it was the audio I could tell the difference on. In T2 when Arnold has just beaten up the biker for his clothes and is leaving, the shot-gun blast has such incredible bass extension. Its not the volume of it, but the crazy low frequencies. My DVD copy of T2 doesn't come close, though the blueray version I have is just as good, probably better. However I can't compare anymore as the player is busted.

The gentleman who had said 2000 would be the year was incredibly accurate. It was then that we all went out in droves to grab DVD players, because we all wanted The Matrix on the new format.

Oh Yes, we studied German by viewing videoed language lessons made on Laser Disks! It felt actually very stupid to view the best moving image ever seen on TV. Technically top notch moving image of talking heads...

Yeah, people keep going on about how physical media are dying, but I don't see it. Until consumer internet connections become substantially faster people will be buying DVDs/BDs for a long while to come.

The best moving image ever seen? Hardly. Also what else would one watch a Laserdisc on but a TV?

DVD quality over Internet? Yep. Plenty of bandwidth for that.

True HighDef quaility via internet? Not yet. Not when 3d is working its way to the common place.

Still requires too much throughput, specially with the uncompressed audio tracks.
