Generally car crashes happen because you can't react to a situation quickly enough (I'm not saying all of them) so it's unlikely that you think anything more than "****" or "must brake / skid / swerve" before impact.

so if you drive defensively, keep ample separation distances and scan two cars ahead and back you can pretty much avoid accidents.

I think you could avoid impacts but its the people behind you that will have you in the ass.

I made my point badly. Say you're driving down the road and a car swerves into you. It's not your fault and you can't avoid it. But if you had fast enough reaction times you could swerve out of the way (I agree, you'd have to have super-human reaction times).

I'm explaining it worse. Put it this way, if you had time to think through a whole scenario prior to the crash you had enough time to avoid the accident. What most people are saying here is what they think / wish had gone through their heads before impact.

I was doing about 60 when I went past the first parked mini in the middle of the road... I had to drive around both cars in an S shape whilst trying to keep the car on the road. I dread to think what would have happened if I had hit one of them or lost control... [help]
I don't drive, but the thought of driving on a motorway that doesn't have lights would scare the crap out of me, which is why I hate the M4 virtually no lighting until you reach Bristol [thumbdown]

I meant a car coming the other way swerving into you.

Yes, especially if you have a parked car in the middle lane with no lights on...

But generally night driving requires a certain amount of bravery because you can't see too far ahead of you so you just have to assume (or pray) that the road ahead is clear.

Really? I find it easier because you can see headlights.

Yes, but if there's anything without headlights in the road you're probably going to hit it.

Come on, it's only unlit country roads where that could be a problem with modern headlamps. 90% of the time you're fine.

Well, when I rolled my car here's what went through my mind.

1.Uh oh,gravel.
2.sh!t
3. I almost have it back under control.
4.I'm going over,I wonder if I'll survive.
5.Better brace for it.
6.Better not brace my arm against the roof.
7.I'm sliding on the car's roof at 60 mph
8.I'm ok.
9.How are there already people here?

I think people were disappointed that there wasn't some blood and guts too,I really do,they seemed really surprised when I kicked the back window out and crawled out with just a scratch on my arm.

Then you're going too fast, have crap headlights, have incorrectly adjusted headlights, you need to clean the lights and windscreen (don't forget inside) and/or you have poor night vision.
If you really drive like that, I'm surprised you've lived this long!
Driving to the conditions includes the distance you can see!

Not at all.

Driving in the dark on an unlit motorway at 70mph you need to spot an object in your lane 100m away to have a chance of stopping before hitting it.

If that object is dark and unreflective even with high beams on you'd have trouble... with low beams, no chance.

Well ignoring the fact that you could easily change lane (If motorways are busy there is enough light to see a long way into the distance), how often have you actually come across something in the motorway? Some things just aren't worrying too much about.

All I meant was there is an element of luck involved in night time driving at high speeds.

Personally I'm very comfortable driving at night time and do it all the time. I don't think twice about it but I can understand why some may feel uncomfortable.

LOL, that statement really makes me wonder if you drive at all...

So you're saying under those conditions I should be driving at 30mph on a motorway? If you did you'd be lucky to get pulled over by the police before someone ran into the back of you...

Then I'm REALLY surprised you're still alive!
Do you slow down for fog, heavy rain, snow, possible ice, etc?

Mate you've obviously got the wrong end of the stick, so I'm not going to hold anything against you for calling me (and pretty much 90% of the drivers here) an idiot for driving in the correct way. But please, think about it a bit more before replying again.
