I personally don't hate my iPhone, I honestly started hating Apple, and that's because they want you to use and enjoy the phone THEIR way. We can't even set a custom text-message-received sound, which any phone in the past, what, 5 years could do?
The same goes for ringtones but it's just hard rather than impossible like sms custom sounds.

In the end of the day I like my iPhone, and it's awesome in many ways, but those little things, which somehow happen to be the simplest issues possible, aren't addressed by Apple.

Also, to some people who had any doubt about how thorough my search for such an app was-
The iStore I am in (I believe it's some combination of both Israeli and EU store), it just doesn't have a single app that sends a scheduled text, even an app that sends the text msg through email, then no, there's also no app that does it like that. There are only apps that remind you about sending a text, and not just a few.
I believe it's because Apple are aware of the need and want to sell as many useless apps that don't even solve the problem just for the profit.

My carrier, for the anyone that's interested, is Orange\Partner, Israel, if it helps...
I agree on the SMS tone front, it is rather lame that it is so limited and they only recently added some new ones. However, at least in OS X, it is dead simple to make ringtones and I am sure there is free software out there to make ringtones easily in Windows.

Would something like this get the job done? There are a few apps that will send scheduled texts but I think it is limited by carrier support. The US has had one for a couple years.

http://www.appcraver.com/textminder-sms-text-reminder/

Here is the list of the supported carriers:
http://txtminder.net/carriers
(I see Orange listed however not for your area but you can e-mail them and they can add support if possible.)

I am not sure what you are exactly trying to achieve, is this for reminders to yourself or something of that sort?

there are two issues with the iPhone:

Too many people have it and way too many of those people are annoying.

I use Audacity to convert mp3's to the ringtone format the iphone uses, but it's just dumb I can't pick a ringtone right off my music list on my iphone... let alone sms tones.

This is a good example of an app, as far as I can tell, that only pops a reminder at the scheduled time, rather than sending out the text message.

another option with scheduled SMS:

I am not sure what you are exactly trying to achieve, is this for reminders to yourself or something of that sort?
I couldn't figure out if BiteSMS only reminds or does actually send the text at the scheduled time.

What I'm trying to achieve is this: Composing the text message and setting a specific time (like setting an alarm clock), on which the SMS will SELF SEND itself on. Not just a "OH Hai, SEND ME" reminder with a send button...

EDIT: Oh great, this BiteSMS app is only available on jailbroken iphones, and I'm not really loving the idea of JBing my phone yet.

Ah, I see what you mean. Yeah, certainly not as convenient but the nice thing that Garageband does is that it EQs and normalizes the tones so they sound the best on the small phone speaker.

From reading about it, you schedule them and the SMS are sent from their server automatically.

It turns out that is a jailbroken app, which is why I edited my post.

Right, did you read up on that link?

Also, have you thought about simply using the calendar? I put all my important, random, and work related tasks in my calendar and a reminder pops up whenever I schedule them for.

Why do you need to be able to send timed texts?

I still can't see what confirms that TextMinder sends the message automatically in a prescheduled date\time. [surrender]

It's just that I've seen many apps on the App Store that claim to have a 'scheduled SMS' feature, while all they do is popping a 'Send?' reminder with an option to confirm. Not auto.

Judging from the information in the link (about the SMS being sent from their server) and the reviews in the App Store, it sends them automatically. No need to confirm, or send, it is fully auto.

Again, what about the calendar, is it too limiting? From what you describe it would work perfectly.

Last night in 4AM I wanted to send my boss a text, for him to see in the morning as it was pretty urgent that he reads it (as I would be still sleeping at that time, I'm working at a later time), and I'd be very glad if it could send itself in the morning, instead of the actual time- 4AM, running the risk of waking the f'er up (=bad).

The calendar is perfect if I wanted to remind stuff to myself, but:

Ah OK, well that would have been helpful information when I asked what you were looking to achieve exactly, earlier in the thread. [rofl]

Anyway, that app should do the trick.

Even if it can really send timed texts, my carrier isn't on the supported carriers list.

EDIT: I'll fire them an email asking if they could add it, as it appears they have added carriers after some customers emailed them with this very issue.

I've been thinking about this on and off for the last day and I still can't think of much use for this feature. Anyone care to enlighten me?

My thoughts exactly...

I bought an iPhone 4 a month ago (coming from an older Android phone) and I love it I miss some things about Android (I was a big supporter) but I love how smooth and fluid everything is on an iPhone. It's a nice phone with a great OS on it. I really like the Nexus S though, but until an AT&T version comes out, it's useless to me up here. [thumbdown]

Apologies to DsK. Someday I will return to Android, I promise. [yes]

If you're a terribly lazy son who forgets their moms birthday, so you just schedule a text to be sent on her birthday every year.

Or on new years so you don't have to bother when it's midnight.

basically for lazy and inattentive people.* I would love to have that feature on my iPhone!

Oh well *looks at iPhone 3GS* "I LOVE YOU!!"

*Not saying BioHazard is any of these.

Disclaimer: The following is a totally rational and, most importantly, middle-grounded opinion, which really has NO place in an internet forum where you either hate or love and you troll to that effect.

I think it's awesome that we have so many different companies taking different approaches to developing the way we use technology. I think it's also great that we are able to access a wealth of information with devices that literally a few years ago were dumber than soup. Thank you Apple, Google and all the phone manufacturers for bringing us the future every day. [thumbup]

*Troll Mode resume*

**** ANDROID!! you guys blow!! Why don't you go fragment all over somebody else's phone. Like iPhonez rulz the flava highway bi***hes!

I don't understand why phones have become like religion for people, each person not happy with what they have and trying to force it to each other's throats.

Why can't it be "i like this it makes me happy. I don't like that for whatever reason." Instead of "i like this and so should you otherwise you're a f@&ing ignorant loser. X company rules"

Sigh

Probably because they don't have the self assurance that they made the right buy, they need others to affirm their choice and if they don't, it's felt to be a personal attack on their choice.

Being old fashioned, I've a basic Nokia 1202 (I think), that's a phone, period!
If others are happy with a bunch of features, that's sweet too [thumbup]

Why do people feel that they must have to have a need for something for it to be of use to others? He OP wants the feature for whatever reason he has had it on previous phones and is annoyed he can't have it.

Then he should have done some research before buying an iPhone. If the iPhone doesnt meet his needs, that is fine. Not the phones fault though. [yes]
