Doubt much really would be my guess... Probably just teaching, and that's if you went on to get a Master's. I think some people with those majors go on to law school as well.

Default Going to School for Computer Hardware
So, I am going to be going to school in the Fall to get my B.S. in Computer Science - Computer Engineering.

Anyone else go down this path or currently going down this path.
Just looking for words of wisdom really.

I was going to get a 2-yr in Computer Science - Computer Programming but did not complete it. Was like 17 att and did not care for school in general so just got a Generals instead (1 semester vs 3 semesters.) I wish that I had stuck it out when I look back on it.
Have not been back because I have no idea what I wanna do. I have been all over the place, and have looked in many doors that I did not care seeing what was inside.

I'm feeling pretty good about this Career path though. My choices are limited and I HAVE to go back this Fall, so I guess this is really it, or the Military to fly helicopters but that is my last ditch option for a career.

Going to be making up an internship resume & cover letter here soon, as I hope to get into something at least. Get out of my damn Valet job. God its been hot outside. [thumbdown]

If you couldn't do it for programming why do you think engineering will be any better?

I understand how boring programming can be (I got my degree in it) but honestly engineering's not going to be any better (you're probably going to have a few programming classes in the course too).

If you think you can stick it out now for a reason that you couldn't before then go for it. Otherwise I say don't waste the money.

I have a degree in Computer Engineering and have a job as a Computer Engineer.

Pick a career that does not keep you inside all day.

I'm a computer science and art double major with 1 year left... I'm planning to go into concept art, 3D modeling, and animation. I realize after my current undergrad, I'll need to either go for more undergrad classes specific towards 3D animation, or get a master's. I'd probably be working a boring normal job for 2-4 years while taking 1-2 classes per quarter (unless I get something nice through a couple contacts, and maybe have them pay for more education). However, getting a job in that field, I'd be perfectly fine staying inside for my work day.

That being said, going military to get training as a copter pilot's been of similar interest to me as well, then getting out and flying med-flight or police copters after my service time were up.

I was also going to have a computer related major and then I realized that the field is FLOODED with people with BA and MA degrees plus I didn't want to ruin my hobby.

if that is an option, I'd take it

the risk of ending up in a dull job is too high with the other option, only a very small percentage of engineers get to design cool stuff (*cough*, iPhones)

Have you factored in all of the negative aspects of the military job in that decision?

Not really sure. More interesting to me. I know there is still programming involved, but I don't think that I will mind it so much.

Pick a career that does not keep you inside all day.
I have always had a job that keeps me outside and it sucks here in TN. I would rather be in Phoenix in 120 degrees than be here with 80 degrees with humidity.
Plus I have bad allergies.
Gym membership + a good amount of land will keep me outside and in shape.

if that is an option, I'd take it

If I went military, I would love to go in as an Office. If I do that, I gotta get my BS now so that I will not be too old to join as an Officer. Even if I hate what I am doing, going in as an Officer would be so much nicer. With how much schooling I have now I would be an E4 after basic, but still, that just sucks.
My step-brother has been in for 11 years and is only an E7. If I went it, after training I would out rank him. [rofl]
IIRC, you might even need a degree to fly helicopters. I can't remember though. Talked to a lot of recruiters. Some Marine tried recruiting me at school and I just laughed at him.

Not good though that the job market is flooded. I don't see how all my friends are going to school for business and finances. None of those guys have jobs and may not have jobs for a while.

I was/am considering politics and/or history, but don't really know what I can use that for. Will have to talk to an adviser.

That is really all on my plate
Computers
Politics
History

I have absolutely no idea what to do. I'm getting to the point where I am just going to pick something and stick with it no matter what.
It sucks too cause there is only 1 school that I can go to that is near here that offers BS degrees. There is a school just down the road but is private and costs $15,000 a semester.
Maybe if FASFA paid for $10,000 of it I might actually go there but I highly doubt it.

Just can't resist because I know it's you Red Dog so I'm going to say it (jokingly) - Why should the government be paying for you to go to school? The private market should sort it out just fine. Don't need the government giving you a free ride.

my friend, I respectfully beg that you do not persue any field in politics. If you are truly a patriot (not a terrorist) you will heed this advise.

Thank you.

Hey, that is what the other side says all the time. The side you will not find myself on.

Just poking around like Lord_P was.

My bad, after your comment on dinosaurs and people, I can not tell when you are joking any more. I do not believe in Red Dog after all.

Anyway, back on topic. Computer Engineering is a subset of Electrical Engineering. So much so that my transition to EE for my Master's was painless. With that said, how is your math background?

Just graduated with my BCSc a few weeks ago.

Our program (4 year degree) was very theory heavy; lots of math. The primary language taught was Java, but there were upper level classes on C++ offered.

If your math is not strong, get reading!
