So wait, Amber doesn't mean STOP like red does, it actually means stop if its safe to do so, slow down or if its a bit too late carry on. So like a warning right?
[rofl]
Don't be a smarta$$

"AMBER means ‘Stop’" - then again, it's your licence, money and points if you want to push it.

Why would you admit to speeding in the first place?

It will be his fault, tbh. You chose to take the safer option and speeding up slightly to get across safely.

If there were cars behind you, slamming on your brakes just to avoid running a 'late amber' isn't the safest thing to be doing.

It doesn't mean "speed up so you'll beat the red light" either. And can I just say it's not "yellow" it's amber.
Amazingly the OP isn't in the UK's amber light land.

Yellow.

Also it would have been his fault, his light was red.

If you have to slam on your brakes in that situation you're either driving too fast, or you're not paying attention, or there's something wrong with the traffic lights. Traffics lights are on amber for plenty of time for vehicles to stop in time in safety.

There is a delay between a light turning red and the other turning green. It's not a terribly long delay, only a couple seconds, but at this point traffic in all directions is red.
If your light was still yellow when he started to go, he was running the red light.

And I'm not sure how the laws work in california yet alone other countries, but up here you're not running a red light unless the light turns red while you're still in the intersection. If you clear the intersection while it's still yellow it would have been entirely the other driver's fault.

Really? Personally, there has been plenty of times on 40 or 50mph roads where lights have turned yellow at an awkward point where its a little late to be braking. Especially lights with the 'red light cameras', which you don't want to be running at all.

TBH, I don't think I have ever been in a situation where I sped up to beat the red light where I couldn't have safely stopped. I have no dilusions that I could have stopped safely; there wasn't even anyone behind me. I was simply avoiding having to wait an extra few minutes at the light. The accident would have been partly my fault, and partly the fault of the person who ran the red light if it did happen... Just a question of who would have been the most to blame.

I would say he would be mostly to blame. And I think most people would agree.
