Default EMP attacks and our music
If there is an EMP attack, will our music be able to survive?

What's gonna happen to music files in solid state memory (portable mp3 players) and computer hard disks?

How will music CDs and casette tapes fare?

Vinyl records?

Even if the recording media survives the EMP attack, will it's respective playback device still work?

There are a couple ways to approach this -

First, there is no EMP weapon (a "pinch"); right now, the only thing that produces a large EMP is a nuke, and frankly, after that, there is no music left anyway.

Now, in a theoretical EMP, the only thing that would survive is the physical media like CD/DVD and vinyl, since the data is physically written in a non magnetic way. However, unless your player for either (CD or record) is as shielded as Air Force One, or uses vacuum tubes, you could kiss it goodbye.

You really should leave the house more - preferably without the tin-foil hat.

EMP bombs can be made for as little as $400, and do not require sophisticated technology to make.

Believe me,
If they can be built for as little as 400 $
They would have been used a few times by now.

No, all music will be lost. Let's keep our fingers crossed that it never happens, especially since that would be the primary concern if a massive EMP went off. /the most extremest of extreme sarcasm

back to seriousness though - being too close to a good EMP will kill you pretty quick too. Remember, your body works on alot of electrical signals, many of which are easily interrupted (sorry, your skull is not good shielding). Too close to a good sized blast and you could expect to be at least partially brain damaged, if not brain dead..

I think we need a sticky about EMP. Maybe we can put some facts in there too.

The OP is concerned about CDs... really now?
