Default I hate the IRS
So i finally did my taxes today and i found out something very interesting. THey told me that i make to much money and thats why im not getting that much back in my return. I only made just a little over $20,000 and they said since i dont have any kids that is why the i OWE the irs money. 20k isnt alot of money anyway either

Now im saying to myself dont i already pay taxes, why the hell do i owe them more money? And then i think to myself, is it my fault that idiots who dont make alot of money have kids anyway? They should of waited but they chose to have kids, so that shouldnt interefere with what im getting back but apparantly it does. But its not all bad, im getting my stimulus check this year since i didnt file my taxes last year.

Curious, how can one survive in Las Vegas on a little over $20,000.00 income? Don't take it the wrong way, just saying that's impressive!

declare zero and you will never come out owing... if you declare 1, they estimate what should be taken out so that at the end of the year it will be close on whether you owe the IRS a little or they owe you a little but either way it should be less than $50. As to the whole kid/no kid argument... waste of time argueing that if you ask me. On a side note though, if you are young, you should get earned income credit, which basically says u aren't taxed over your first 12k or somesuch, don't quite remember.

I was informed last year that, in order to get stimulus check i had to have filed taxes in the years of 2007 and 2008 ( ie aaid taxes for 2006 and 2007). I wouldnt have gotten one last year , i had not filed in 2007. I had to file my previous years tax return before they would send me a stimulus check.
the stimulus check rules are online somewhere google them to make sure you qualify etc and have done whats needed.

I claim 3 and owe every year

But it's a lot better then letting the government sit on my money all year and getting a 'whoops, here's the money that was yours' check.

Exactly. I usually put in 3 and hope to not let them have too much for the year. Still usually get about $1k back but 4 I think I would owe.

Interestingly enough, this year they changed the tax law for head of household/dependants (back to pre 2005 type counting). Finally I can claim my gf and her daughter. This was about $3.5k more back for me. I almost am getting $5k back this year.

I claim 2 and usually have to pay around 90 bucks at tax time, but I get 50 more bucks a month than by claiming 1. If I claimed 1 I'd get 400 bucks back at tax time... however, why bother when you can already have that money to use? I don't really want my money in a lump sum later, I want it now.

I claim 0 every year and still end up owing about a grand or so because of my bonus. It isn't taxed enough when I receive it. [thumbdown]

Thats the way I see it. I couldnt do it the other way when I dont know how much I will owe them next January. What am I supposed to do, open a bank account just for "possible returns to government"? Naah, I'd rather get a nice 500€ cheque each Feb/Mar instead of having to "fear" the big bill.

I'll never understand taxes. If I file single I get back like $1,000 less when I claim my education deductions. I hate the government bullshit. Not married? No student loans for you. Not married? Enjoy not getting the full benefit of your deductions.

I've started claiming 3. I'll probably have to pay next year, but at least I'll be able to put it towards bills and it'll ease the cash crunch. I still think they need to completely re-structure the tax system. Our taxes cost us more than our house.

Oh yeah.. I'll have to pay the 1% school tax my employer keeps forgetting to take out, AND I'll have to pay a penalty. I work in Indiana, live in Ohio. So I get to pay taxes in 2 states AND I don't get to deduct my taxes in either state from the other. Double dipping is bullshit. If I didn't hate kids so much I'd be a professional breeder.

If it ever gets restructured, they need to just allow you to have a flat % taken out every pay. Claim 0, they take out far too much. Claim 1 and you end up owing a bit usually. You could be like some people and have no taxes taken out so you put it all in the bank and collect interest and pay at the end of the year, but meh...
