Yeah I agree. Sometimes they have a seemingly good idea, but it's always ruined by poor acting, low production values, bad pacing, and they never expand the idea into something interesting.

Most of the time I can't sit though the whole movie. [thumbdown]

I have always wondered who actually views and enjoys the movies. They literally must have a strict checklist to follow for each movie.

- Circle one:
Monster | Alien | Hybrid mutant | Epidemic

- What happens:
People get killed - team sent to eliminate the threat.

- Poor attempts at humor and/or sexual attraction amidst the danger.
- Horrible video effects and repeated sound effects.
- No name actors with maybe 1 washed up former big time actor who can't get any other work.

Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed a few movies in the past, but they just seem to recycle the same crap over and over lately.

so true. they are absolutely wretched. about 6 months ago I came across a "Wolfenstien" ripoff. It was laughably bad. Basically, it seemed like it was a terrible ripoff of a terrible video game story (and that's saying something when it's worse than a poor video game plot)

I love RTCW actually, but this movie was soooo bad.

Well it seemed appropriate......[yes]

(drk)
n. Slang Trash, especially inferior merchandise.

I remember a time when the Sci-fi channel seemed to do these things much better than regular network television. They must be making money somehow, so I wonder who is watching this stuff? (beyond stargate and etc)

It´s a German word

dreck = dirt, trash, crap

I thought it was funny reading it in a English sentence

yeah, definately- also the battlestar galactica mini-series that compelled the new series.

You can tell the difference between their big-budget efforts compared to their worse than B movies that they usually make. I bet they film most of them over the course of 2 weeks and then some budget CGI firm goes to work.

while we're on the subject of Sci-Fi network, I met as well mention another huge piece of trash they produce: Destination Truth and Ghost Hunters. I've got no problem with the subject matter in and of itself (cryptozoology, paranormal, ect) but the shows are just complete farces that take themselves seriously. It's actually disgusting and insulting to anyone with a clue's intelligence.

For example, they do a show on Sasquatch or some other mystery creature that if it exists it's 1 in a million to sight it. These assholes go into the field for 2 days at best, and magically, he always manages to have an encounter and use "scientific methods" to investigate it. Same thing with the ghost hunters.[rolleyes]

I swear to god if I met that assclown that hosts Destination Truth i would punch him in the face. Same thing with that guy on the A&E ghost show. He deserves his legs broken for being such a shameless fraud and claiming he's got science and truth on his side.

Those were good.

I also liked Earthsea. They did a good job on that one as well.

Funny there should be a thread on this... I just caught the start of "Riddles of the Sphinx" on Sci-Fi, and my god it was bad... I didn't know whether to laugh or wince.

I really like Sci-Fi, it's my favourite genre, but the channel does it no justice whatsoever.

So you know, the network doesn't make these movies. They purchase the licenses to these crappy movies.

The schlock fests are made first and then the network drops some money to get the TV rights to them.

Not for the sci-fi originals. Take what looks like the god-awful movie alien apocalypse- the creator came to sci-fi with a basic script and sci-fi dabbled in the title's name and made script changes.

I LOVE those movies. They're so bad, you can't help but laugh at them [rofl]

I especially loved the black hole one, mostly because I live near St. Louis and they used the Science Center Planetarium as an "underground research facility," and my buddy was an extra in it

Oh, I also loved the part were you see the arch destroyed, then about 10 minutes later you see if fully intact in the distance from the east side. Classic.

The funniest one I've seen yet is "Pterodactyl" which stars Coolio as an army unit leader, sent in to rescue campers/hikers from pterodactyls. If you haven't seen this movie, force yourself to watch it next time it's on. It's really, really bad. Not only is the acting horrible and the script bad, but the CGI effects look like they were contracted through a community college somewhere. I kept expecting to see the silhouettes of Mike, Tom Servo and Crow in the bottom corner, making fun of the movie, but they never appeared. It's an instant classic (in a crap sort of way).
