I think that it's just that when you are younger, you tend to have more time of your own, and probably more uninhibated, total fun and activity. Your days are filled mostly with adventure, discovery and enjoyment, and each day is a new discovery.

Later, when you are working the grind, days tend to blur into each other because except for weekends or vacation, things are much the same again and again. Time tends to blur into the endless sameness, and the years seem to suddenly speed by.

Boy. Thats kinda depressing! [rofl]

this is kinda similar, but I often have what seem like hours, days long even, dreams and I'll wake up and only 15-30 minutes have gone by. I suspect the brain processes faster or something, or the time in your mind's eye is sped up. Maybe that's why you get the sensation when you just wake up that time is moving fast?. Maybe your brain is used to doing it in your sleep and it hasn't worn off yet?. Just a thought

I've also had some surreal moments when time slows down, like times when i was in a fight, or playing football or something. Also, right before a car crash and similar dangers like that. This must be really common though, everyone talks about it.

the movie Jacob's Ladder has some of this subject matter in it. Also, the short story Occurence At Owl Creek Bridge- (there is also a french film version) There was another recent movie that was similar too. I forget what it was called, but it had Keira Knightly and Adrian Brody in it. Took place in Vermont mental institution. it's a pretty cool movie as well.

I never though the thread itself could have been more stupid than the title. You proved me wrong.

Time is actually speeding up (or collapsing). For thousands of years the Schumann Resonance or pulse (heartbeat) of Earth has been 7.83 cycles per second, The military have used this as a very reliable reference. However, since 1980 this resonance has been slowly rising. It is now over 12 cycles per second! This mean there is the equalivant of less than 16 hours per day instead of the old 24 hours. Another intrepetation is - we, or rather Consciousness have been down this same road seven times before over the last 16 billion years. Each of these cycles of Creation runs 20 times faster than the last one. The same amount of Creation is paced 20 times tighter. This is why time seems to be going so fast. It is not "time" but Creation itself that is accelerating.

Ok, I'm sorry, that was a jerk remark of mine.

But the thread is kind of mixing 2 things in one. There's a difference between your perception of a time unit and the actual time unit relative to space time, which is what Einstein uses to describe time.

Your physical observation of time has often little to do with space time. It's influence by how much fun you're having, how tired you are, if you are drunk, intoxicated or any other psychological effect that will influence your perception of time.

The fact that people are just mixing these 2 topics together into one mumbo jumbo bothered me but I could have been much nicer about it. I'm sorry.

I don't think people are confusing it per say. In his post, it's obvious he's talking about his mind's eye or perception. However, sometimes people don't read his whole post, or since the topic is time, they feel free to discuss the actual time unit. I don't see why it's a big deal either way or why it should have bothered you.

It was good of you to come clean though, and admit it was a little rude, so no harm done.

Default Time speeding up?
Reading through another thread that delved into FTL and time travel...I got to thinking.

I remember a few years back, I would often wake up after a night's rest and everything seemed to be "sped up."

People's conversations (including my own), music, and even analog clocks seemed to be moving ~50% faster than usual. It was very unnerving. The feeling would eventually pass after 5-10 minutes, though.

I haven't had this happen in over a year, though.

Has this happened to anybody else? Is this a known phenomena, or am I crazy?

I feel time is slower the more I think about hence that speed is very fast when Im having fun or is distracted by something interested. If you would be torture for hours then I think time would be slow as hell's time to turn into ice world.

I don't know about speed up really, not exactly like you typed it but I think time goes faster the older I get. I remember when I was younger with no patience at all, 5 minutes to wait for something is more annoying then waiting for something for a whole week now.

I feel exactly the same

When I was younger a day/week/year whatever felt alot longer than it does now

I also get that sped up feeling when I wake up, like when I have to get up for work in the morning I'll wake up at 3.30 for example, then by the time I get down the stairs it's 3.45, a journey that takes 20 secs or something but somehow 15 mins has passed, it's really strange

I too had that then realised it's due to me sitting on the bed half asleep scratching my nuts.

Time is relative.

1 year when you are 5 is 20% of your existence. 1 year when you are 20 is 5% of your existence.

I’ve often wondered about this; I too find time passing me by much faster then it use to. As a child, I found my days would go on and on but now... they just go by too quickly.

The best explanation I have is that we are using the right side of our brain more often than we did as a child – more time spent in our creative mind state, often reached through reading, or drawing – or the more likely: gaming. A lot of my time is spent learning – playing the piano, reading, drawing, and daydreaming...

I don’t know; it feels right to me. But as was said: time is relative.

That is true but you forget the mystery of a memory. If you are at a place that is feelign it takes forever, the memory won't give it the exactly same feeling because of different experiences. I lack of words to explain further..
