Default Dear General Public
Seriously, W T F is wrong with you? How the hell do you get your PC's so infested with virus's and malware? Jesus it takes me hours to clean this **** up.

Really, do you not notice the popups and sudden influx of porn sites? It's like looking down whilst having a piss and saying "hmm I didn't notice the huge festering boil on the end of my penis... oh well, mustn't be anything bad".

Then 3 weeks later you knob falls off and you casually carry on about your business because it "mustn't be anything bad".

Please, for the love of god pay attention and come to me before your PC turns into the silicon equiv. of a 50 year old STD riddled *****.

AND ANOTHER THING! How the hell do you let this happen? There's like a dozen free anti-virus and anti spyware products on the market. Do you go swimming in the sewer without a wet suit? Do you bag the previously mention ***** without a condom and 3 gallons of sheep dip? NO!

Save me a job or at least keep backups of your data so I don't have to endure half an hour of "oh, I don't know where 5 years of irreplacable data is" and "it's all on the computer" comments.

/rant

Now if you'll excuse me I have to go quietly discuss this matter with a customer useing a claw hammer and pliars.

No movie reference intended. Just frustration at the constant stream of infected PC's.

I wouldn't normally mind but it's so busy that taking up a bay for 3-4 hours cleaning them really backs work up.

Don't forget that when your computer becomes totally unusuable due to software and spyware that you have elected to install, you can simply phone up the company you bought your PC from a demand a complete refund as clearly they sold you faulty hardware in the first place.

Or, in our case, because they elected to disable the free antivirus we installed for them.

Seriously, people actually disable the software because it's stopping them installing malware and then blame us because the software THEY disabled didn't protect them.

In my old customer service job for a computer company, our company would sell PC packages on "buy-now-pay-in-12 months" schemes.

The number of people we'd get phoning up on 11.5 months claiming their PC was "broken, and they demanded a refund" was just silly. [rolleyes]

I remember on guy phoned up, said his PC was crap and wanted a refund - I explained we could not even look at that option until we had investigated it. I offered to get the machine back to our workshop for investigation. It was at that point the little pleb admitted to me that he'd broken the machine down and used its parts in 3 other systems.

He even had the cheek to get cross when I told him that his warranty was no longer valid [rofl]

I was in the same situation as you about a week ago Hexus. Got a bunch of PC's in that were completely overrun by Virus and spyware/malware. Spent a good 2 days running scan after scan with various programs. Whatever it was just kept coming about an reinfecting itself even after disabling system restore and running scans in safe mode. [cursing]

It got to the point where I just said screw that and formatted them all. I think from now on, if the first 3 scans or so don't rid the malware...the POS is getting wiped. I back up data either using the file transfer wizard or just copy/paste stuff to my bench computer to restore. If the customer isn't happy about losing their programs, than tough luck...their programs were most likely the cause anyway.

Some people think getting rid of a Virus only involves deleting a few files and Voila! good as new! If only it were...if only...

Please read the thread above, those guys a qualified malware experts and can help you remove malware without a need of a format (with special cleaning codes / software, like combofix.exe etc) there's no need to format when your infected, it's just your normal antivirus software can't allways remove the malware so you need to use other software and get help from a malware help forum / the experts, but even running the following steps can fix your issues, but if you still have issues you can make a thread to get professional help.

Exactly! There is a big placard in one of the offices where I work that says, "The Drivers aren't the problem with our job. They are the reason for our job." I've always thought it would be nice if we stole that sign replaced driver with user and put it in the IT department. If it weren't for dumb people Hexus people like us wouldn't have jobs and let me tell you it's one thing to moan about working on peoples machine with virus infestations during the day but it's when you are on call and dumb people wake you up at 2 in the morning that things get really frustrating.

Thanks for the recommendations. However, I already use ALL those programs and then some. Sometimes it's just not worth the time and effort especially if you have to do all this on 3-4 PC's at a time. If it's your own PC then it's different. Running all those scans and performing all the steps can easily take 4+ hours per PC and not guaranteed to remove all traces

I think all makers of spyware/malware and Virus/trojans makers should be burned at the stake.

I don't think you used combofix.exe, mgtools etc, you can guarantee to remove all the malware with help from those guys with a post on the forum if not with special coding / removing codes to remove, but your right it does take long while to scan with everything, but you can leave them all scanning at once and it takes about an hour, but it depends on how many and the size of what hardrives are on the PC etc, time will vary.

Although I haven't had many opportunities in the past to work on other people's PCs when they request a job, i've recently been able to do a couple of jobs. My relatives decided to buy a new PC not too long ago because they thought their old PC's motherboard had gone wrong, as it tend to bluescreen all the time. I have a look at it, only to find the CPU heatsink is caked with dust so no air can flow through to cool the hot P4 prescott. Yet before, they took it to PCworld and a local PC shop - neither of them fixed it. PCworld simply replaced the motherboard which didn't work (although when the PC was sold, the fan speed was simply set too slow to cool the P4) and some guy at their local PC shop decided there was a fault with the motherboard. 15 minutes later after a HSF clean with new paste, and voila, the PC works flawlessly through several hours of orthos.

Some people out there seriously just don't have a clue. Ah well, at least it keeps you in a job Hexus. I'd be tempted to run some ads around uni for PC maintainance work.

When it comes to viruses and other bits of crap, I tend to run Spybot, McAfee and Hijackthis. Any other freeware apps I should add into the mix?

Personally, I think there should be an aptitude test for people who want to buy a PC. If they fail they have to wear a shirt that reads "It's MY fault!" whenever they get their PC serviced.

I know exactly how you feel.

The general public are all pillocks. I work in a sports shop and it's sorta the same thing.

They are incompetent. They don't know their own size and I'm like "wtf? what the hell you wearing then?"

Can't wait to finish though! Last shift is on Tuesday! [thumbup]
