Default question about uploads
So I use torrents to download things.....

anyways, my question is:

Why is it if I have 1.5Mbps upload and my torrent is using 10k up, why does my internet seem to crawl when I surf the net??

how many connections do you have open? if you have many, your router may have trouble keeping up, depending on how cheap it is.

Are your uploads set to maximum? If your uploads are maxed out or near maxed out, I know that with at least Comcast it can slow downloads. So with torrents, I have my uploads set to 75% upload capacity just to keep my downloads wide open, and my internet surfing wide open as well.

If I increase my upload speed anymore, it really starts to put a stop on my download speeds.

Either the connections issue, which is most likely, or your ISP reminding you that it doesn't like the whole idea of peer-to-peer file sharing and that you're a very bad boy.

Try limiting your global maximum number of connections.

look for something like "maximum global connections" in your torrent client. try setting that at a lower value (ie if its at 100, try changing it to 50)

It's because file sharing clients cause multiple simultanous connections. Whereas a website is just a single connection.

Think of it as trying to open 500 or more (small but different) websites at the same time & your computer / router have to process each connection, one at a time.

It's the main reason ISPs don't like file sharing... it's the simultaneous connections that cause the network slow down, not the speed of file transfers.
