Default I Love This Website & Forum Already!
Hey everyone, opackfan here, I was searching google not too long ago trying to find a "Game Meter" and stumbled upon this site/forum, So I put the game o meter to the test w/ my HP that is just a standard $900 desktop from Best Buy vs. my almost 2 year old Alienware Aurora M9700, and spent an hour comparing what I can play on my HP vs. what I can play on my Alienware, i'm happy to say my Alienware can handle Age of Conan I see, what a relief! I just got the collectors edition yesterday, my HP however was "close but no cigar" Great forum too w/ lots of members! I can't wait to dive in to some conversations!

In closing i'd just like to say what the heck is so special about the Best Buy Pre Order War Rhino! Can't you get the same thing in game at like level 40 or something!

Just to say "welcome' - and better keep out of the overclocking forums as otherwise you'll be another lost soul...

Welcome to opackfan .
Overclocking, tweaking, watercooling, modding and whatnot... Do those things still exist? Do people still do that? It's pretty much dead here, but does it still live anywhere?

Was wondering that myself to be honest. I think the era of OC'ing was around 2003-2005. Think it died right after there.

Oh those were the days, trying to get 9800s and 2500XPs beyond their stock clocks. [thumbup]. Now I think it's more to do with media and entertainment and compactness.

I remember overclocking my GeForce2 MX in... 2001? I think serious oc'ing started a bit earlier. I wonder how big a parralel there is between overclocking becoming more popular, and the release of 3DMark2000 and 2001.

XS is a good place to start; but there are still plenty others. OCing is alive and well, but people have moved on from FM.. [thumbdown]

I guess I was late to the party. I didn't start OC'ing till around the 9800/2500XP era.

I remember the days when there were a lot of dedicated people using crazy setups with the use of dry ice to cool their components. A lot of people got excited about it and were amazed, especially on these forums. You'd find a lot of articles about it everywhere, but it seems to have died down a lot now though.

Unless they're actually still going and it's just because I haven't checked the OC section lately.

overclocking has not died persay, i would say its because most of our processors are fast already for games that are out right now. I mean i have a core duo 2 1.8ghz that i bought wen it came out and its been sitting at 3.3ghz ever since and i never needed to raise it yet lol

This is not the point.. the point is,
it was hot on FM and loads of great overclocking threads , those are gone

Yup, including those god awful sigs with all the specifications of your machine.

I think the first cpu I overclocked was a Celeron 300a, bought it when it came out in 1998, pushed it to 594Mhz (on a 130FSB) and there it stayed for about 6 years, In that time, the desktop that held it was passed to my dad, and in time he upgraded and passed the PC back to me, I still have it and it still runs at 594mhz.

That desktop was so good it allowed me to play Max Payne, even though the recommended specs were a 1Ghz CPU.

I did have SLI'd Voodoo 2's though, and a 8mb ATI rage Pro, so that helped a lot too. [thumbup]

HEY!!! [rofl]

Yeah, those were the days. I over clocked and benchmarked constantly. It was the main reason I was here to discuss/ask/answer questions. I had a Pentium 3 550mhz@833-ish(maybe 725 gotta look it up on my ORB) LOL It was barely stable but got a benchmark out!

Have any of you checked back on your old benchmarks!? I looked back the other day to like 2001 or something like that
