Default Anyone track their MPG and costs?
Ever since I got my iPhone and found a neat little web app for it I've been keeping track of my mpg, how much I'm spending on gas, and how many miles I'm driving. It's really interesting to see how wide of a range I can get out of my 1.6L Del Sol!

Since October 12th I've done a total of 2,985 miles which required 129.56 gallons of fuel! [shocked] That's run me $395.85, or about $3.06 a gallon. When I break it down even more that's about an average of 23mpg from those almost three thousand miles. I spend 13.2 cents JUST in fuel costs for every mile I drive! I've had a high of 30.92mpg (for sure highway, but I must have been really paying attention to my driving style still since I've done more then one decent length highway trip) and a low of 18.96mpg!

Crazy stuff! I can predict that if I don't take any large road trips this summer (>500 mile) I'll probably drive just about 9,000 miles using 388 gallons of fuel which will require almost $1,200 if fuel prices just bounce around like they have since last fall, which they probably won't.

23mpg? Fooking hell that's aweful. I get over 40Mpg on average and that's with city driving. If I do longer drives, it's more but that's few and far between. I know as I monitor it closely and I don't have an iphone....

My average (Renault Clio 1.4 16V) is 5.3 litres / 100 km = 1.166 gallons / 62 miles = 53 MPG

The US gallon is smaller than the imperial gallon due the differing size of the pint. Therefore, acarney is running at 27.7 imperial mpg, and for comparison you are running at 33.2 and 44.0 US mpg respectively.

acarney, you're still running pretty badly on a 1.6.

Ya, I like to jump off every light... well, jump as much as 125hp will let me. My red line is like 7800 rpm or something so when I floor it it goes way up there. It's an automatic too, so less feeling of acceleration for the amount of power I have and slightly worse efficiency. I still love my car though and if I cooled it down when driving or do highway it's much better with fuel. I just hate to think what it would be like for me if I had an SUV or V6 like some of my friends.

Also about 80% of my driving is city.

Also, the car is a 1993, so it's probably not as efficient as some of the newer small engines in Honda's and stuff.

Well if you floor it all the time then of course it's going to drink. I get around 35-45 MPG out of my Golf.... but if I keep flooring it then it will go as low as 20-25.... it's an auto as well.

You're correct. Why does there have to be so many versions of gallons? It's so confusing. Litres and meters are such a nice universal measurements.

Inch, feet, how many versions of miles, ozs, pints, many versions of gallons.

Yeah, I have this thing called a trip odometer in my car. Everytime I go to the gas station I reset it to 0 so I can tell how many miles I drove between fueling. I've discovered that I can then divide the number of miles I've driven by the amount of gas I have consumed in order to figure out my gas mileage. Sometimes when I'm feeling savvy, I will even do the calculation on my cell phone calculator!

I used to, with running back and forth to work my car doesn't really get warm enough (5-10mins away) and it's only doing 27mpg...30mpg if im lucky which i thought was bad so i decided to look what the manufacturers mpg figures were for my car (ive never looked b4) 34mpg so they say so my 15yr old car is still doing ok even though i never have it serviced (well i say never, just not as often as it should be)

I don't really bother keeping accurate stats. All I know is that I use about 1 full tank per week. Possibly more if I go somewhere on the weekend. I spend like $30-$40 per week on gas.

does it really require to have an iphone to track your MPG?

I just reset my odometer everytime I fill my tank and right now the ratio is
1 lt per 10km or around 23 MPG
car is a 94 integra with a B16A2 engine, standard and I hit vtec once in a while.

my mileage improves during summer though..like an extra 50km per tank

Are you sure about that? I thought a US Gallon was smaller than the Imperial Gallon. So shouldn't your US mpg be lower? In other words 39mpg which is still pretty damned impressive for a 3.0L V6, hold on it's a Diesel right?

I have a 944 Turbo I get 16ish mpg(US) or 336 miles per tank, which is about $64 dollars a fill up, and that lasts me a couple of weeks. So about $1500 a year.

Look at me go, and I didn't even use a iPhone!

Yea must be, i was about to call BS. [rofl]

I get around 42mpg around town in my 2002 1.4vvti Toyota Corolla, driving more aggressively that can drop to around 36 though.

Well ya, I don't need the iPhone for instant stats but I mean I use it to keep a long term record so I can average everything across 20 tanks or something. I could just write it all down but I never have any paper in my car plus I don't need more paper stuffed in my glove box. I just meant the iPhone let's me keep detailed long term stats so even the rare 30mpg or 18mpg extremes can be factored in real fast and easy..

I was trying to get a 944 before my Del Sol. I wonder if I would get around 16-18mpg or worse then that because of my driving style. I think the one I was looking at was a 1983 944S.
