Default Anyone have an Amex Platinum Card?
I'm curious if anyone here has an American Express Platinum card. Is it really as amazing as it sounds? I figure once you can actually get the card you've already arrived in life but I'm still curious if anyone has one and have made use of their exclusive card holder only features. Like has anyone really used them to score great last minute tickets to events or booked travel making sure to go to the partner hotels so you can flash the card for free room upgrades and stuff.

I'm adding that to my list of things I need to work hard for, first the Platinum Amex card and then the BLACK card!

Not me personally, but I have friends that own construction companies, they are very wealthy, in the 50-80 million networth range, anyway, they always get free season tickets to the redskins game, free tickets to go to portugal (where we are all from) and so forth, tickets to go to basketball games and alot more stuff thats probably about 15k they get for free. And they dont really live extravagant lives, pretty much this is all just by putting their business expenses on the card.

Yeah I have one as my main credit card.

Main reason is that I also have a Costco membership, and since I do Amex doesn't charge me the yearly fee.

3% back on gas and travel, 2% restaurants, 1% everything else....get a check I can cash once a year, basically for paying $0.

I forget about the other perks but they do send a bunch of exclusives....I guess I better check it out.

Amex Platinum is really nothing special.
So long as you qualify for it (with regards income) then you can get one and get the perks that come with it.
Amex Black is where it's really at, however that is by invitation only.

well, you have to earn enough points and what not (spend a crap load of money) to enjoy the perks, its not like you get approved and bam, free this, free that, etc.....as for the black card....your spending has to be really high, like consistently over 250k a year on the card and a extremely high networth.

It's pretty cool, access to American Airlines, Delta, etc clubs at airports, free upgrades at some of the nicest hotels, etc. They're pretty good perks, also, it's not a credit card, from my understanding it's a charge card, thus you have to pay the full balance every month and can not carry a balance on it and make payments.

Yeah I have one as my main credit card.

Does it kill you paying the like $485 fee every year for the card? That seems pretty steep but again, the free hotel upgrades and free tickets on airlines if you buy one full fare ticket seems pretty useful if you travel a lot.

It's nothing super special, but it sure beats all the other cards. It's not just something where you redeem points, there are a lot of extras for using this card at partner places. Like the MGM villa's, book a night there (I hear it's $5,000 to $15,000 a night) and you get $500 in spa and meal credits each night. It's still small compared to the hotel room cost, but that's a lot of extras, far better then just 1% cash back or something, plus the hotel stay earns you points.

well, you have to earn enough points and what not (spend a crap load of money) to enjoy the perks, its not like you get approved and bam, free this, free that, etc.....as for the black card....your spending has to be really high, like consistently over 250k a year on the card and a extremely high networth.
No, a lot of stuff is just for being a card holder. All the hotel room upgrades are just holding the card. Being able to get to Gold status or Platinum status on any airline is for just being a card holder. One first class full fare international ticket and you get two is just for being a card holder. The points get you awesome stuff too, but there's just a lot of extras for holding the card.

see thats dumb, if they are that rich then buying tickets to travel shouldnt even be a dent in their pockets, yet theyre rich and the cc company gives them free ****? It would be good if they did that for the common folk IMO

You must be talking about another card other than the American Express Platinum....

I think the fee is only like $50 a year, which is waived for Costco members (free).

Plus while they have some cool benefits I have never seen a free ticket for buying a ticket...hotel upgrades, yes but that is nothing that special.

Everything he described applies to the American Express BLACK card (except for the yearly fee he quoted), so maybe he's getting the two mixed up.

yeah, for sure....two WAY different things. One is $5k to join, $2.5 yearly...lots of benefits but you need to have significant assets and spending....

the other is something I have.

Annual fee for the Amex Platinum is $450

The Card's annual fee of $450 entitles members to a broad array of benefits... http://www201.americanexpress.com/ap...gmID=undefined

I was just looking around on Google, and apparently there's an AMEX Optima Platinum that has no annual fee, etc. The regular Platinum is the one with all the bennies.
