Default the HD war has a 3rd player now
If I had a HD-TV, I would seriously consider buying that Apple TV now for the movie rentals and no longer use a player for disks.

If the quality of video is comparable to Apple's high-def trailers it'll suck, the banding is horrible.

Are all of the movies 720p though?

I am really impressed with what they have added to the Apple TV with Take 2 though, not only are there some great features but it was much needed. Not only that the price drop is great. If I didn't already have a laptop and a 360 I might have seriously considered one.

Agreed - I watched the trailers for Beowolf and the banding was simply horrible [no]

no, but if you look at the studio support I expect the HD library to expand rapidly (afterall, Apple has a few competitors to kill)

I'd be interested in knowing more about this, Netflix has just started offering 6000 titles for download for free if you use there DVD rental service but I can't be bothered to keep linking my laptop up to the TV so a dedicated box that was independent would be pretty neat if they have a good enough selection.

I tried the Netflix's online movie viewer and was pretty underwhelmed. I definitely hope they do a good job with the iTunes service.

I'll consider an Apple TV when the movie rentals are available here in Canada.

Other than the fact Apple announced it how is this different than what 360 owners get with the marketplace? There is quite the pile of content there already.

Neither of these services are offering what you see on physical media, the high bitrate 1080p, uncompressed quality....

I have said it before, I will say it again - no matter what format wins, I want it to be a physical format. If i buy something, I want to own the damned thing; i want to be able to take it with me, and I want to be able to loan it to my family friends whenever I want. This downloading crap is just that... crap..

Well their new thing is HD rentals. You don't keep the physical disc anyway.

Course this all depends on having a internet connection fast enough to stream it. Unless you really want to stream 27 and 50gig+ movies.

Physical formats are what I prefer. I like to own my CDs. No DRM, no crappy compression. I'll rip them my way, to 320kbps or flac if I like it enough.

Yeah but this is about renting movies for a certain time. And I think thats very cool. I hate having to bring back DVDs to the videostore. always two drives for one movie.

When it comes to owning movies, I agree, I want to own them on actual DVDs, not download them. Its the same with PC games. I'd never purchase a PC game which I cant have a DVD/CD and a box for. So I boycott steam and all the others.

I don't think it's got anything to do with streaming you download the movie to the hard disk on the AppleTV then you have something like 30 days to watch to start to watch it and 24 hours to finish watching it. It all depends what you are after really, I know I'll be using it (not the actual appleTV box) because I missed the last 3 episodes of season 6 of The Shield. It's twice as convenient as psychical format because 1) It's not available on DVD and 2) It's going to be $6 to finish watching the series rather than shelling out for a Boxed Set.

I'm already an avid Netflix customer I don't need to own many movies to be honest. Been there done that with VHS and DVD. And at the end of the day I'll take a crappy encoded HD version of a film like LOTR or Star Wars over no HD version on HD-DVD or Blu Ray which is what broadcast if offering over Physical formats right now.

The compressed HD looks terrible compared to what is found on either an HD or BR disc. The other thing I don't like, especially about Live's service is that you only have 24 hours to watch the movie, and its STUCK at your house. That alone is quite stupid.

I will stick with physical formats. I want to hold the disc in my hand, rented or not. If I wanna take it to a friends house then so be it, I can. With downloaded media you can't, and the 24hr watching period shouldn't be there. If I have a 5day rental, Perhaps i want to watch it 5 times, once a day. Can't do that with the live rental service and if the iTunes service is the same way then thats something I won't be doing.
