FAQ - What is the User Infraction System and how does it apply to me?
You cannot get rid of expired ones; they allow us to see a users behaviour over time. |

So to put it into perspective. Since it appears to be confusing people here is an example: 6 point infraction = a ban. If you got two 3 point infractions, you would be banned. When the infractions expire, the ban would be removed. |

Whilst you can get banned by racking up a certain number of points at any one time - remember that we also review an individuals history when deciding on what action to take if someone steps out of line. We can (and have) banned individuals due to their continued misbehaviour, despite the fact that they never quite racked up enough points at any one time to be banned by the system.

Would I be correct in believing the active infractions will count towards a member being prevented from taking an active part in the forums and the elapsed ones being used to check for a tendency towards anti-social or actions contrary to the business model of the site hosts, eg, discussing illegal 'net activities?
I think I've had two infractions, IIRC, and several others were doing/did exactly the same thing without being pinged, which peeved me rather. In general, there are some people here that, at times, have been "morons", "idiots" or whatever and I don't have a problem with that. However, there are posters who fall into that catagory who, despite all evidence to the contrary, will use such terms to describe those who try to show trhem the error of their ways. Can the MOD's give an idea if context is taken into account or is it, like some of the other prohibited words and terms, a blanket ban? [edit] See above - darned slow typing[/edit] |

They are designed to haunt you for the rest of your life. But hey, there are some pretty cool mods and users on the board and it's a new year. [thumbup] |

As Chris has pointed out, from our point of view the infraction system is a "fixed" system with which to judge a user's actions on the forum and it is especially helpful for understanding whether recent problems are a new thing, a reoccurrence of an old habit or something completely different. It's much more reliable than using one's memory to assess such things.
