Nice work, man, I can see you having a lot of fun designing and machining odds and ends and model bits.

I presume it's using a stepper motor but what sort of torque and rpm range has it got?

The holding torque is ~1 Nm. I don't know how many rpm they are running at max. ~1000 rpm I think but then the machine's going too damn fast.

Alright, here you go: http://www.enrarot.net/videos/cnc/hellofm.wmv

The pen is flexible and has play at the tip so the lines don't go exactly as they should when I run at this speed. It's not the machine's fault though.
[thumbup] You rock Tah!

Today I made a spindle mount and started playing with actual milling. I don't have all the milling bits I need so the parts turn out rough but it's working perfectly. Here's a short video of it cutting a 3D leaf model out of some plywood:

i used to use one of these to create PCB boards, quite cool machines.

I took it up a notch and tried to mill a larger 3D part. I set it to feed at 3600 mm/m and eat 4 mm deep at a time so it moved pretty fast. First I milled the bottom surface, then I flipped it over and milled the top. I had to make four holes in the corners with the machine first to align the part when I turn it over. After a little sanding the leave is pretty nice looking. I have ordered a ball end mill bit which will eliminate the rough surface.

Nice tool you are building.

But the drill has indeed alot of speed to it, like the engine just go on full revs. Also a vacuum for the wood-dust and pieces be nice.

this "simple' CNC machine, does it also have to cut different materials?

It was running at ~20000 rpm I guess.

I will cut wood, fiberglass, carbon fiber and aluminium. CF and alu will only be cut after I get a water cooling system to contain the dust and cool the aluminium/tool. Aluminium will also require a belt drive or a diffferent spindle to reduce the rpm considerably. I tried cutting a PCB yesterday which was a piece of cake.

I already thought about dust vacuuming. The side plate of the gantry has a channel in it for connecting with a vacuum hose and a dust shoe over the router. That way I can have the vacuum under the table with a hose connected to the channeil inside the gantry so it's out of the way. I just havent' made the adapters and dust shoe yet. It'll be made when I get the aluminium spindle mount I have ordered. The MDF-mount I have now is only temporary.

I look forward to all your building steps, really nice work going on. Not to forget you also program your machine to cut the product out of raw material.[thumbup]
