I just came back from canada the other week and its my understanding that to fly in you need a passport, to drive in you do not.

Hope this helps!

Default Need a passport?
To go from the U.S. to Canada? I get conflicting reports, from what I read it seems that I don't,but some freinds of mine recently knew someone who went and that person said they needed one.

I'm a bit confused, how easy is it to cross the border?

I believe you have until Jan 8 (something close to that), 2008 before you need a passport to Canada. As of now however you need two forms of identification ie(birth certificate and drivers license.) I have a passport now and that makes the border crossing much easier both ways.

Thanks,I think I'm going to go ahead and get one anyway, just to be safe.

So other than that it's pretty easy/hassle free? I geuss I'm just nervous about driving there then getting turned back for some odd reason or other. I've never been to a different country before.

Canada are not tightening anything up. They almost never even check ID's. They just ask where I am going and how long I will be there, then let me pass. You only need a passport to FLY back into the US as of now. You don't need a passport, just a driver's license if you drive, that's all. I go probably once every two weeks. I live right on the border of Ontario. It's much harder to get back into the US than it is getting into Canada. A passport won't make any kind of difference. They run your plates when you try to get back into the states and they even take your picture when you drive up. They can run your criminal history as well with your driver's license if you give them a reason to.

It's soon going to be required (if it isn't already) to re-enter the US from Mexico. Kinda strange for those of us in socal that have been to TJ just to party for a night, never needed more than a DL to get back before.
