Awesome[thumbup]
I was told on another forum it was either a pontiac 400 or 455 ![]() So i know its probably at least a pontiac 400[shocked] So would i be better off sticking the pontiac engine in my truck (engine bit the dust) and dropping a Corvette LT1 engine in its place or having the motor rebuilt to leave in the firebird? ![]() thanks for the responses ![]() |

Awesome[thumbup] Its a pontiac block, it won't make power stock as the heads have terrible flow. Parts are also harder to find for a Pontiac block than a Chevy BB. If you are unlucky its going to be a 326ci block. |

Most likely to be a Pontiac 350 or 400 as said before. I doubt its a Ram Air III or IV. And most definitely not a super duty 455. In your position, I'd at least pull the engine and check what I actually have and see what my options were. The Chev' is almost certainly the correct option but it'd be nice to have a killer Pontiac mill in a Pontiac car[thumbup] |

He's probably correct but some of the Pontiac combinations can offer a shed load of torque and power with relatively minor work - such as replacing a very low lift cam' with a good street one and some headers. If not concerned with originality a LS1 or LT1 transplant from a newer car would probably a good choice as they are both ligther, more powerful, and far more efficient engines. Still, if he wants to keep it stock having the block freshened would be a good idea. I don't trust engines that have plants growing up through the engine bay.... |

i was able to get some numbers off the right side of the block, they lead me to believe it could be a RAM AIR IV
![]() Edit: All the numbers ive found on the damned thing 6X (Near the GM3, Left side of Block) 9796756 (right side of the block) 46-YX (Above 9796756 on right side of the block) I also found the number 9796756 on the front side of the block as well |

Its a pontiac motor for sure. Either a 350, 400 or 455. Let me see if I can find a way to decode those numbers for you.
From what I can gather its a 400 with 98cc cylinder heads. The YX should mean 400 and the 6X should be on the heads and mean 98cc cumbustion chambers. I gotta go grill up some steaks but I will see if I can get a sure fire answer for you when i get back in a bit. Also check here this will help you for sure. http://www.teufert.net/identify/identify.htm |
